My boyfriend and I stayed at Treetop apartments in June 2012. We had never been to Bulgaria before and were a little nervous about the big resorts, as we really like to have peace and quiet. Treetop is the best of both worlds - the apartments are modern, well-equipped, spacious and beautiful on a quiet hillside overlooking the sea. And it's only 10/15 minutes walk from the bars and restaurants of Albena (more on that later).
Christine owns the apartments and is so welcoming. She knows the local area like the back of her hand - so put the guide book down and just ask her. We wished we had done so earlier on! She does a range of really reasonable trips to local sights, and can even offer really cheap car hire. We highly recommend Paradise Beach - you'd never find it by yourself and it's genuinely one of the nicest beaches I've ever been to. But give the hot springs a miss as they're really run down and crowded - not at all what you'd expect from the way they're described! We wish we'd gone to the mud baths instead.
We didn't really love Albena. It's not a town and there's not anything interesting to see - it's a purpose built resort with a load of all inclusive hotels. But the beach is very nice and as long as you don't expect anything else, you won't be disappointed. We did find a couple of nice places, just at the start of the strip (if you're walking from the apartments). Highly recommend the beach club (great cocktails) and Beer House Kartel (which weirdly has the fastest free wifi I've ever used!). These are the best places.
Bulgaria itself is quite run down. It's not unusual to find ramshackle bars at the side of the road every few miles. Having said that, when you get away from the resorts the countryside is some of the prettiest I've ever seen. We hired a car from Christine for a few days and enjoyed driving about a bit. Bulgaria has 300 days of sunshine and we enjoyed 7 of them. The weather really is beautiful and the sea is warm and clear. In Albena, particularly, it's great for kids as it's very shallow for some way out.
All in all, the apartments are a stunning, tranquil place to spend a holiday and Christine really goes out of her way to make it special. It's a great place for couples and families alike, and there's something for everyone. Bulgaria does have a lot to offer, but you do need to go out to find it as Albena is just a busy resort - so hire a car if you can and follow Christine's advice!
