“Hotel and setting is OK, but food dreadful as are the people”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2011

Our room was quiet and kept very clean, as was the whole hotel complex. Cleaners were always visible and they were the only friendly people at the hotel. The reception staff were officious, arrogant, rude and totally unhelpfull, even bloodyminded. We arrived at 6 am and were told off for being late!!!! This created problems when the 'Dine Out' option was used. We had to be there seven nights to use this and our late arrival caused the computer to reject any reservations. After lengthy arguments, it took half a day to inform the computer that we were booked for 7 nights, even if it registered 6! Then the restaurant we had chosen (Poco Loco) had red stickers on the food we could order which was extremely limited, and was awful!
If you are a veggie, then the food may suffice as the meat was nearly always undercooked and posed a real health hazzard as well as being cold and lukewarm at best. Perhaps that's why there's a microwave? The hotel was full of rude, crass and ignorant Russians, along with their ruly, disrespectful and similarly ignorant children who ran amok most of the time and pushed in when queueing for food. The 'Security' at Borgas airport was the final straw. Officious, rude and stupid in the extreme. Logic was not a word in their vocabularly. They even looked inside my purse and lipstick!!! They also made a full hand 'feel' both back and front which was very near the mark and really sickened me. I didn't even register on their body scanner either!! There's nothing to see but poverty in the interior (we hired a car for 3 days to get away from the place and 1600k's later still saw nothing to talk about) but would suggest hiring one to go to Nessebar as it is cheaper then the 'trip'. There's nothing there anyway except shopkeepers trying to sell crap for 3 times what is costs at home. I would need a frontal labotomy to return, or sectioning.

Room Tip: second floor low nos.

Magnolia Hotel' is located in Albena,Bulgaria.First, few words about yhe locality:verry nice, with payment at the entrance(but is not verry expensive if you stay in a hotel)but with the advantage that you will not pay for parking;some hotels are locatied on the hill and some on the beach. The beach is verry good:large, with fine sand, having zones reserved for hotels(including those from the hill),alternative with free zones;verry good and clean water,no roks.Is a nice locality and i say that the specific is represented by the piscines:interesting(water games)and in the same time different.
Now,about the hotel.Placed on the hill, has two buildings:'Magnolia Garden'-where is olso the parking(not large)and not verry good looking on the outside and 'Magnolia Lux',located a little lower and which is good looking on the outside.'Magnolia Lux' is a nice hotel with bad management. Why i am saing that?I give you some examples:first of all ,at our arrival, we shoud repair the lock of the room-which wasn't work properly(took us few minutes);then was impossible to open the windows of the bathroom-it was blocked(and i think for ever);one of the doors of the corridor broken and was repaired after 2-3 days;the cleaning of the rooms was made on the afternoon when the tourists were there;one day i asked my key at the reception and they said that is not there-after i searched it abroad and returned to the reception and they found the key there;another day, going to thr reception and found one of the receptionist(a girl) talking to the mobile phone-she turn me her back and i shoud wait untill she finished. So with good mangement coud be a good hotel.

Hotel was rather disappointing, the good things were they had a nice pool, cold even on warm days though, very very busy everwhere, the restaurant was poor, difficulty at times to find a table to sit, the food not good, it seemed that every meal was german sausages in one form or another, it did improve alittle in our 2 nd week of stay, but not up to the standard of a western European hotel, something else to bear in mind that nearly everbody smoked, not good in a restaurant.
But the town of Albena was lovely & a super beach.

What has happened to Bulgaria? .
We have been to Albena five times the last time before this was in 2005. What a difference 5 years can make but before we tell you about the resort lets take a look at our hotel.
The MAGNOLIA hotel is shown in the brochure as 2/3 star all-inclusive hotel and from the outside it certainly looks good. We arrived at midnight on the 30/07/2010 at check –in we paid 40.00 lev (approx £20) for a safe deposit box which was in the wardrobe in our room and then take by the porter to the wrong room was the start of our ordeal , left for 10 mins while he went back to the reception to find out which room we should be in when we had already told him the room number twice .
OUR ROOM . The Magnolia is made up of several villas type building and two main three floor blocks a restaurant , reception and pool area. The accommodation blocks are split between the main block connected to the reception and a second block known as the standard rooms that where refurbished in 2007 this is the older block. We was in a standard room with an odd number ( all odd numbers look over the pool all be it through trees , Even number rooms are on the back side looking over a wooded area and part of the restaurant.) The room was compact but did the job with air con, one double bed, one single bed , dressing table with chair , built-in wardrobe and TV . The bathroom was another question , Very small and lacking lots of maintenance and hygiene . The smell of sewage with Black Damp on walls and ceiling , door handle hanging off, towel rail hanging off , tiles broken missing or replaced with different coloured ones, shower curtain torn and stained with rust and to top it off ANTS not a pleasant greeting at all. Well like we said at the beginning we have been to Albena several times and our expectations wasn’t too high but things where to get worse . In a 14 night stay our bedding was never changed we complained several times but all we got was our room mopped out several times and towels changed three times during our stay , one of the days the dirty towels where taken but no clean ones left the maids had knocked off for the day so we had to use our beach towels. The balcony was dirty and used very little by any guest stopping in the block.
FOOD. The restaurant at the Magnolia is for all guests staying at the Magnolia Garden, Magnolia Villas, and Hotel Orhideya Park (that is situated across the road from the Magnolia) this led to the meal times being very busy and if you went for a meal at the wrong time you would not be able to find a table to sit at and lots of pushing and shoving between the guests. The best time to eat would be as soon as the restaurant opened 7:30am Breakfast , 12:00pm Lunch and 18:00 evening meal but not matter what time you went to eat most of the food would be cold or Luke warm . The restaurant is clean with a wide variety of cooked and un-cooked foods . First appearances look good as you can see from our pictures with fresh salads, Fresh fruits , Fresh bread , hot and cold drinks and a variety of fresh deserts all good . The cooked foods like chips , smash, sprouts ,sweet corn , fried eggs, burgers, fish ,spaghetti ,and so on all looked nice but due to the temperature made for a un-pleasant meal but with only one microwave oven the chances of heating it up was pretty rare. Personally we took to having salads and sandwiches for most of our meals but went out every night for a good meal down in the resort. To many guest led to tables being left un-cleared as staff struggled to keep up with demand. During our 14 night stay a BBQ was put on once at the restaurant but it was too busy for us to get any.
DRINKS. Three bars at hotel one in restaurant, one at the pool and one in reception area. In the restaurant drinks were served in glasses with a good range of wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks on offer. At the pool and reception bars drink are served in plastic cups and most of the time good portions are given , some time we found the drinks a little too strong but hey better than weak .
POOL . The pools at the magnolia are nice and clean but not enough room to accommodate all guest including guest staying at the Hotel Orhideya Park , the sun beds are soon taken with most guest reserving them with towels first thing in the morning, we were up for 7:00am most morning but only got the sun beds twice our whole stay (should have gone down with towels before going for breakfast) The snack bar and seating area around the pool was poorly kept with tables left un-cleared on many occasions . Snacks consist of chips, spaghetti, burgers, pizza ,salads and ice cream but if you wanted pizza you would have to be quick only the kids would rush in and take plates full before the waiter could put it down . Music around the pool area was loud and mainly dance and trance music ideal for the younger generation.
GUESTS. British guests staying at the Magnolia will find themselves well outnumbered by German, Russian and other east European guests but according to some of the Bulgarian waitresses we met Albena had few English visitors this year, this is a shame as Albena as a lot to offer.
RESORT. Anyone who has been to albena will know of its charm the lovely beach , the clear warm sea and all the open air bars and restaurants with live music playing. Until recently cheap to eat, drink and smoke and shops full of bargains from fishing tackle to t-shirts, dresses and other novelty gifts. In 2007 Bulgaria join the EU and this as had a bad effect for holiday makers going there, we found lots of changes to Albena one of them being the large amounts of cars now in the resort with most of them parking on the pavements spoiling the look of the place. General maintenance around the resort seems to be lacking , back in 2005 the resort would have an army of gardeners and cleaners working to keep it clean now we notice very few with hedges and gardens being neglected . The bars and restaurants seem to be suffering from the large number of all-inclusive hotel in operation one of the popular places in town the POCO LOCO is one such place, in the past it would be packed solid with people struggling to get a table with live music and some great dancing from the waiters and waitresses especially the head dancer called EVIL . This time we found the bar to be pretty empty still had live music and Evil was no longer there, the food was still good but pricey. We tried several bars during our stay most really good but this year our favourite would have to be MARGO’S Steak House, run by Margo and family with a full staff of young friendly waitresses and resident singers /entertainers Toni and Mr G . The service was always quick and friendly with really good food at prices not to harm your pocket. Half chicken and chips 12 lev (approx £6)

Pools were good, but access to pool side was difficult due to selfish attitude of other guests. Closing it at 18:00 did appear very early when it was still so hot.
Food thankfully differed daily but so did the quality. Finding an empty table was a huge mission every meal time.
Entertainment was constant however didnt really consider using English a great deal despite knowing English holiday makers watching. The shows based at the local theatre/on the pool side were thought up and performed by teenagers so not of a high standard at all.
All bars issued plastic cups due to their locations and certain holiday makers felt they were far too important to queue.
The bedrooms had been refurbished however the bathrooms were still in need of replacement and a thorough good clean. The toilet leaked and Infact the room was never cleaned other than the floor wiped. Sheets and towels were not replaced despite the complaint made at the reception.
The location of the hotel is on hill with steep steps to the beach. A train does run for roughly 2 lev each, this is recommended.
Despite all inclusive the internet was 5 lev for half an hour.
The beach was clean and all inclusive meant free sunlounger set.
