A hotel with potential although when our group arrived we all agreed it needs lots of TLC. Bedrooms smelt damp, bathroom needed a good clean and grouting in between tiles was disgusting , towels very old and worn although bedroom a great size with super outlook. State of exterior beyond just a lick of paint it needs a complete overhaul - certainly NOT 4* STANDARD.
I was told this hotel is due to be refurbished from April 2013 onwards and not before time. Apparently the management wish to get a 5 * international rating -
For the management PLEASE look at reaching a proper 4* before attempting higher. (please see below for the positives)
Foor average although plentiful- would have liked to have had a bigger selection of Sri Lankan food and local fresh fish particularly as there are no restaurants close by....................... EXCEPT for a super small beach bar we found along the beach about 45 mins walk away (10mins by tuk tuk ) called JANIREST where they serve the most amazing fresh langoustine, lobster, crab, white fish etc etc. Jani is also a great guide of places to visit in Sri Lanka. A few of us had a great day out with him and his driver down to Galle stopping off at a number of interesting places on the way down (including turtle hatcheries moonstone mines, stilt fishermen etc) - we all tasted lemon gin for the first time too!!!
On the other hand staff couldn't be more helpful - all including restaurant, bar, pool, room staff were charming, very helpful and put themselves out to help. It's unfortunate they allow untamed dogs into the resort - they are quite nice dogs but the Managers go around with sticks to threaten them off and the dogs cringe. I would have thought they should gather them up and take them to a dog shelter or at least look after them properly so they don't roam around like wild animals.
We were a small group of single travellers having met for the first time at this hotel. Our holiday was marvellous, so much so the bathroom and the tired hotel seemed to vanish from sight.
The hotel is positioned a couple of hours south of airport so easy to reach
It is in an ideal position to take visits to both north and south of the island
Monika the elephant visited us regularly in the grounds - she is just amazing - we all fell in love with her.
The grounds are a decent size and and fairly well maintained.
The swimming pool if clean and a good size.
Lovely sandy beach is just outside security fencing of hotel and stretches for miles and miles where you will see only local fishermen and the odd walker.
Huge rolling waves crashing down on the beach - great challenge and good for body surfing although a very strong undercurrent.
STAFF in hotel GREAT - very friendly, charming and helpful. Lovely people.
