“Nice Place to relax...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

good amenities and nice beach-side to relax.. a beautiful property but the food wasn't something to my taste but that is very personal thing for the traveller... and i don't understand the reason of a minimum character length of reviews by TA :)

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

We have just returned from the Club Hotel Dolphin in Waikkal Sri Lanka, we researched it first on trip advisor to find out what we were letting ourselves in for, ( thankyou to one of your reviewers for his information ). On arrival we were a little worried because it didnt look like the kind of hotel we would normally stay in ( its accessed down what seemed to be a very basic back road ), however, we opted to stay in one of the villa's and this was very nice, quite spacious and clean, ( i understand these have been recently renovated ), although we requested a sea facing they were fully booked and were given one in the row behind, which had uninterrupted views of the ocean anyway so i was very pleased with this. There is a safe in the room, a very large bathroom and a mini bar ( you have to pay for that ).
The hotel in itself is quite large and located right on the seafront, although swimming in the sea isnt recommended because of the currents ( there is however an area just in front of the asda tour place that is protected by a sea defence and its quite safe there if you like to dip in the ocean. There are two distinctive parts to the hotel a quiet area and an activity area, we opted for the first, theres a nice quiet pool and a very good snack bar for lunch. We did have a problem with sunbeds however because there just isnt enough of them.
We used the Sands restaurant all the time as we found the choice very good, not often did i find there was nothing there that i like ( im a fussy eater ), but on the occasion i coudnt find anything that tempted me the chef made ( on my request ) a lovelly boneless chicken curry, thankyou chef it was fantastic. The staff are very very good, very attentive and polite all the time from the gardeners to the people at the top, and nothing is too much trouble.
We went on a trip organised with our tour rep and it was a fantastic day out ( very long and tiring but worth it ). I would hoever warn people about the hard sell at some of these places, we visited the spice garden and the hard sell was very intimidating and be warned the products are very very expensive, but on the whole a lovelly holiday.
before i finish a special thanks to Shirly our Virgin Holidays rep, he gave us excellent service, sorted any problems we had and was always on hand to help, one of the best reps weve had, thankyou shirly.

Room Tip: the villas are best

We stayed here following a recommendation by a friend we requested a garden villa which was a lovely big room and great bathroom and few minutes walk to main building, restaurant etc. The gardens were beautifully kept and the staff very attentive. We stayed here for two weeks we travelled with Thomson Worldwide and through our rep Sammy booked 2 trips out one for 2 nights 3 days to Kandy, Polonawaru and elephant orphanage and one for 2 days and 1 night to Galle and a short safari plus an amazing river boat trip and lunch - the company they use is Aitken Spence and we had our own driver/car the trips were wonderful our guide lovely and very patient (needed when driving in Sri Lanka) we had personal guides everywhere and would thoroughly recommend them.

Room Tip: I would recommend either a garden villa or beach villa (sea can be a bit noisy) the main hotel rooms...

Club Hotel Dolphin
We styed here in February 2013 on an all inclusive package from Hayes and Jarvis.

Firstly in summary this is one of the best hotels we have stayed in over the last 15 years.
The staff are friendly and nothing appears to be any trouble.

Location

The hotel is situated on the east coast of Sri Lanka north of Negombo, about 60 minutes from the international airport in Colombo . The road from the airport to the hotel is faily well maintained as we found were most of the main routes around the coast.

The hotel is on the beach, whilst it is a public beach we saw no locals using the beach infront of hotel, this however would not be am issue as they are all very friendly. There are of course people on beach selling trips (more of this later).

There are very strong currents in the sea and swimming is not advised except for very strong swimmers, I would advise parents not to allow there young children in sea here. There are no life guards on beach or pools.

With the east facing location the evening sunsets are fantastic I have posted pictures with this report.

Rooms

We stayed in the individual bungalows as advised by other reviewers we feel this was money well spent. We did not opt for the ocean view bungalows but had one with a garden view, you can still see ocean down the side of the bungalow in front . We were very happy with the size and standard of finish of these bungalows (pictures are included). There is a large main room with at least a queen sized bed, and it was one mattress not 2 singles pushed together, which we find a real pain. The bathroom was very large with a large walking shower big enough for 2. There is a large counter top in bathroom along one wall with a full width mirror above.

A safe is provided in the wardrobe and a mini bar (this is not included in the all inclusive rate)
The room boys clean the. Room once a day, bed linen and towels are changed on request. They will provide what ever you need for your room if asked. Bottled water is provided in room every day.

There are also hotel rooms in blocks around the mail activity pool. I leave it to those who have stayed in these to comment on them.

Facilities

There are 2 pools on site one at each end of the complex. We used he quite pool no music or games. The other pool is the activities pool, there appears to be lots going on but as we did not use it I leave it to others to comment.

Meals are served in the buffet restaurant. These are breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are also 2 snack bars one by each pool.
Standard of food is excellent as is choice, we were concerned before we arrived as our daughter who had stayed at a different hotel said all meals were curry based. Not true here, curry is always available but there is food for all tastes at each meal.

There is an a la carte restaurant that is an additional charge we did not use this so I will not comment on it. You can upgrade the all inclusive to gold all inclusive at additional cost. This also gives you access to the a la carte restaurant and other additional features if you want them.

Wifi is available in some of the site unlike the claim that it is available across the site. However where it is available it is at a reasonable speed (don't expect to stream video)
The service is free of charge.

Out and about

We did 4 trips one booked through the rep and 3 with one of the beach sellers I referred to above.

The first was a 2 day trip booked with the rep to noi Ellea and Kandy. The first pert was from Colombo to noi Elia by train, this is a fantastic way to see the country. We travelled in the first class coach. There ar 2 outside viewing platforms that provide un paralleled views of the country side. We departed at 05:55 and the views through the mist as the sun rose we're spectacular.
Food and drink was provided on train in the air conditioned carriages.
We spent night in noi Elia then visited tea factory, temple of tooth in Kandy, botanical gardens then elephant orphanage .

Our next trip introduced us to our guide for the next 3 trips. Blacky, he runs his own business Blacky tours and will tailor any trip to what you want. He always comes with you and ensures you have a good time and do what you want to do. If you want a good tour look up Blacky on beach, although if you are on beach he will find you, don't be worried he is not pushy just very friendly. His sister has a shop next to asda tours yes I did say asda. Nothing to do with asda in uk ,Blacky can be contacted there. There is a tesco tours and Sainsbury fashion shop again no connection to uk.

We stayed for a week following a weeks tour. This was the perfect place to relax and unwind. The staff were very attentive nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in a superior room which had a sea view over the pool as promised. The room was comfortable and clean but we did not spend much time in it. The food was top quality and a very wide choice. The curries were great but in addition there was always european food on offer. The only downside would be for those that like going in the sea there are strong currents and it is a bit out of town.

The food at the Club Dolphin was plentiful with a wide, wide variety of choice. I would rate the food 3.5/5. Similar to T K Maxx, you need to select very carefully what to eat. However, everything else was very good. The room was kept to a high standard, the celebrations were fantastic and the swimming pool took me over three minutes to swim from one end to the other.

The entertainment for adults was a disco but not our cup of tea. All in all a very good hotel situated a two minute walk from the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the swimming pool. You can walk 3 steps from your room and jump in

Stayed in January 2013. This is a large tour group oriented hotel with good amenitiies, excellent beach location; however, the beach is steep with potentially dangerous currents. There is a sheltered cove approximately one kilometer away.

The room was well equipped. There are 2 large pools,

Room Tip: Select a room away from noise of pool guests.
