“Disappointing and Frustrating Experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2008

This was a disappointing experience, and the hospitality industry may not be the right place for the people running this operation. We stayed in the Trapper cabin, built in 1992. There are sleeping platforms big enough to handle four people. One platform is about 3 feet wide and 14 feet long. The other platform is about 2 and ½ feet wide and 10 feet long. Each platform has a single pad that is about two inches thick and is covered in vinyl. The cabin also has a dorm-sized refrigerator, a window air conditioner, and a table with four chairs. The flush toilet and showers are a good two hundred meters down a steep gravel road. There are pit outhouses much closer, but they smell very bad and could stand to be moved (and have new, deeper pits dug). There is a gas grill on the deck of the cabin, and a picnic table. Due to car problems that held us a day longer than expected in Yellowstone, we had to push each of the remaining reservations of our trip out by one night, including this one. We contacted Badlands Trail Rides and Eastview Campgrounds (run by the same operation) more than 48 hours in advance to ask if the cabin and horseback riding would be available a night later than originally planned, and were told they would be. In a live phone conversation, we agreed with the proprietress on a time for the trail ride in the evening of our arrival. Just an hour before our scheduled arrival and trail ride, the proprietress notified us that since she didn't know if we'd be coming, she put the horses out. Instead, we could take the trail ride at 7:30 the next morning, a half hour earlier than they normally start. Upon starting our trail ride in the morning, the guide gave us a tongue lashing, telling us how much trouble we had caused by not coming when originally expected, since it was difficult for them to reschedule the cabins and trail rides. I told the guide that had I known we were inconveniencing them when we rescheduled, we would have understood and made alternate plans. The guide continued haranguing us for the first five minutes along the trail, as well as criticized my riding in ways I have never been criticized before (I have many years' experience riding a wide variety of horses, had professional lessons from multiple instructors, and ridden competitively). We decided we didn't want to be subject to this behavior for the next two hours, so cancelled the ride right then. The guide was aghast that we would do this, and countered that we were lucky to get this private ride at this special time. You can get a rustic camping experience here if you want it. However, I would advise that if it becomes necessary for you to change your plans, don't reschedule, as it will certainly inconvenience the operation. Cut your losses and find a different place to stay and ride. (For details about getting car repair services in Yellowstone, see my Canyon Lodge post for July, 2008.)

I am not one to send letters of praise or comment cards back, but I could
not let so memorable an event pass.

My husband and I joined friends to vacation at Little Missouri State Park near Killdeer, North Dakota.

We were able to rent a cabin and horses from Tom and Twila at Badlands Trailrides and Eastview Campgrounds. The lovely rustic log cabin had a view that cannot be described without seeing it in person. Our 'front porch' memories will be cherished for years to come.

A very special 'gitty-up' to Tom, for his excellent job of guilding us through the trails and renting us well-trained sure-footed trail mounts named Frosty and Peaches.
