The Donaldson reminds me a little of Ian Shrager hotels I've stayed at (St. Martin's Lane in London and Clift in San Francisco) - except much bigger, more comfortable rooms, much smaller bill, and no attitude. I like the Donaldson a lot better.
I've stayed at the Donaldson three or four times but always end up in the same room so I know that room 7 had a huge comfortable bed, original artworks, nice flatscreen TV that swivels on a wall-mounted arm, plenty of storage space, heated floors in the bathroom, a fridge below a bar area, desk, and a small "living room" area. The room across the hall (#8?) where my dad stayed once was done in black and white and seemed a bit smaller. Each room must have its own distinct theme.
I've never had a meal at the restaurant, but my wife tells me that it was outstanding. The hotel is also in a nice location for exploring Fargo's tiny downtown.
I had to think really hard to find anything to warn people about. Here they are. One, It gets very dry indoors in Fargo in the winter. Two, there is a railroad fairly nearby and, although the windows are double-paned, I think it woke up my wife once. Three, the bathroom in my room was kind of small (no bath, just a shower). Finally, the hallway carpet may have been worn/discolored at the edges. That's it. This hotel is a fantastic value.
