Owner description: Penang Butterfly Farm has begun its transformation. It will be closed from 8 March 2015 to December 2015. Penang Butterfly Farm was set up in March 1986 as a 'living museum' to educate the public and serves as a research centre for butterfly and insect breeding, apart from just being a tourist attraction. Visitors to Penang Butterfly Farm often find themselves surrounded by a myriad of fluttering butterflies within a seemingly natural setting, and imagining themselves in an enchanted wilderness, bejeweled with colourful gems of creation. The best encounter at Penang Butterfly Farm is undoubtedly the free flying papilions in the enormous enclosure. The live exhibition of selected invertebrates, reptiles and ornamental fishes are also crowd drawers.Beyond the aviary, Penang Butterfly Farm's indoor live discovery sections provide an exciting time for families to get closer with other less explored fauna kingdoms such as tarantulas, frogs, beetles, snakes, lizards and aquatic creatures. Having traversed this complex with educational interactivity, live displays and an insect museum, visitors then walk through time in an art and artefact gallery which displays a huge range of genuine ancient relics and cultural antiquities. For the nostalgic and collectors, a souvenir outlet awakes the visitors, selling nature and butterfly related paraphernalia.

“Lovely for a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Nice to be up close to so many beautiful and colourful butterflies. The design of the butterfly enclosure has been completed thoughtfully and beautifully with some amazing opportunities for beautiful flowers - of butterflies or people. There is some cover in the butterly enclosure for people if it rains. The inside displays are interesting, particularly the glow in the dark scorpions!

Entry fee is reasonable, good gift store and a small eatery on site.

“Get your camera ready”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

We caught a bus from Georgetown to the butterfly park. This stopped a few minutes walk away at the outdoor adventure park. However after we had been to the butterflies and walked back to the bus drop off point we were told that there was not a return bus, the bus obviously only went up that far if there were passengers wanting to go there. Thankfully some lovely local people gave us a lift down the hill to the bus stop. Amazing! There were taxis outside the butterfly park, which we had opted not to use as we assumed the bus would take us back.
The butterfly park itself was great but nothing flashy, VERY hot, and lots of the same type of butterfly, but after a while you begin to spot different ones here and there. Definitely glad we went and we have some great photos. I was a little concerned at the very small enclosure for the large Iguana lizard, although it did seem very healthy.

It is much more than just a butterfly garden. There are some other very amazing animals there too. Highly recommended. It was a highlight of our stay.

“Butterfly oasis - something different to take the kids to see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

Maybe youve seen a butterfly in your garden and admired its winged patterns and effortless flight - well multiply that by about a million at the Penang Butterfly farm.

For only a few ringets you can pop inside this butterfly sanctuary and see butterflies in all different colours and sizes right up close. There are literally thousands flapping about in a garden full of interesting plants and ponds.

You will only need an hour to walk around but it is a different and interesting experience and also has a separate information centre with other animal exhibits (did you know scorpians glowed under UV light? Well you can see it here). Recommend for old and young guests.
