This hotel conversion embraces you from the moment you enter the cozy lobby with its fireplace and comfy lounge area, and complimentary milk/cookies and wine and cheese. I There is also a complimentary Continental breakfast (but I didn't try it). However, the huge, high-ceilinged (at least 11 feet) room I snagged was FREEZING --despite the thermoset set to 80 degrees, the thermometer r registered only 60! And as the heat rose...as heat will...those high ceilings left me out in the cold! The carpet was worn and had spots; the bedside lamp didn't work, and the less said about the bathroom's cracked tile and mold, better. The locals think it's a great place, so either they've had better rooms or they never stayed here. I give it high marks for charm, effort to please, and public spaces, but low on creature comfort.

Room Tip: Ask to see it first and make sure thermostat and lights are working properly.

I lived in a loft conversion in Illinois and so The Brookstown seemed just like home. It is a conversion of an old mill complete with exposed wooden beams and lots of atmosphere. The decor is colonial/federal for the most part and fits nicely into the conversion...and did I mention there's a hotel cat? Sally arrived from Seattle in a truck, she had been trapped for 7days without food or water but was still in fine shape. She is very friendly and loves to be petted.
We had a junior suite which was very roomy and inviting and included a coffee maker and microwave. The included breakfast was very good with both hot and cold food available, and plenty of it.
The cheese and wine at 6 was very welcome along with the milk and cookies at 8.
I notice some of the adverse reviews but for us the staff were friendly and attentive, one free glass of wine was more than adequate and the cheese and biscuits took the edge off our hunger pangs.

this was our first stay at the Brookstown Inn. I had planned a weekend getaway to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We absolutely loved it. Our room was beautiful, the service was wonderful . the wine and cheese and cookies and milk were a nice touch. The designers did a great job of blending old and new and we would definitely stay here again. We even got to meet to meet the resident cat. I would definitely recommend this to visitors staying in Winston-Salem-such a nice change from the chain hotels!

The Brookstown has character with the exposed brick walls and high ceilings. There is a beautiful courtyard all lit up at night. The wine and cheese was just perfect to relax a moment after arrival and before dinner. Keurig in the room was so nice for early next morning before heading down for lavish breakfast. The staff for check in and check out was very nice and friendly. We all we needed in our suite and more. We heard no other noise and had plenty of hot water. Next time we stay, we'll ask for a smaller softer pillow; I have no doubts that the staff will be very responsive.

The decor is beautiful, the rooms large, and the staff very helpful! They offered wine and cheese at 5pm, milk and cookies at 9pm and hot breakfast. Unfortunately I couldnt try them but I am sure they were amazing
The only con is that the hot water takes long time to heat, but it does get hot.

I/we normally only write reviews when we really like a hotel but in this case we have mixed feelings but wanted to write a review anyway. Plus points of the Brookstown Inn are :
(a) Really interesting old building. High ceilings, lots of character.
(b) Great location - it truly is only 5 or 10 minutes walk to Old Salem, depending upon which part you are going to.
(c) Free Wifi signal was good, reliable and worked throughout the hotel.
(d) Hotel recommended we eat at Willows Bistro (2 minutes walk away) - it was good. We went there for both lunch and dinner, which we do not normally do.
(e) The hotel cat!

The things that disappointed us about the Brookstown Inn, given how they market themselves and the other reviews were :

(1) Water was gurgling/trickling through the large pipes in our room from around 10.00 pm until 4.00 or maybe 5.00 am (when it stopped!). Noise was loud enough (and varied enough) to keep us awake for significant parts of the night. Of course, we reported this to the Front Desk in the morning (it did not really seem practical to try to report it at 1.00 or 2.00 in morning.......) - they may or may not be taking action.
(2) The wine and cheese is a good idea. But, in our experience, if a hotel is going to do this, they should do it properly! At the Brookstown Inn, they offer you a very, very small amount of wine in a plastic water "glass", with any further wine charged at $5 per "glass". Also, the server allowed us and others to use plates for the cheese which turned out later to be the dirty plates!!
(3) Front Desk staff seemed poorly informed. For example, we called 24 hours in advance to enquire if we could buy Old Salem passes directly from the hotel - they said we could so we went via the hotel the next day. It then turned out, amidst some confusion, that in fact they did not have any passes. To be clear, we do not expect the hotel to sell the passes - but, if they say they do, especially if you call 24 hours in advance to confirm, we expect them simply to do what they say.
(4) For this standard of hotel, breakfast was poor. Poor selection, "soft" bananas and eggs did not seem to be real (very dry, like airline eggs). Again in our experience, most boutique hotels serve much better breakfast - to be honest, the breakfasts in Hampton Inns are better or at least equivalent to the Brookstown Inn (more fruit, wider choices etc).

So, in conclusion, we enjoyed our time at the hotel and honestly had a great tme in Old Salem. The hotel has several very strong plus points, as noted above - and, we may well have been unlucky with the water noise in our room (room 201) - but, in the end, we were left feeling disappointed by the hotel and simply feeling that they could be doing so much better............

Room Tip: Given my review, obviously avoid room 201 and check out the water noise.

David W,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on your recent stay with us at the Historic Brookstown Inn. We appreciate all feedback we receive from our guests, and we take into account every review – the positive and the maybe not so positive points.

We do feel disheartened that your stay with us was not of the highest quality that you expected and that I know we are absolutely capable of here at the Historic Brookstown Inn. We do know that there are a few quirks that the building presents, some that make our guests stay more enjoyable and some that are less than enjoyable – the trickling water in the pipes. We strive to make each guest feel at home when they stay with us, something that we do very well on an everyday basis. We take measures to ensure this at all times be it an emergency maintenance fix or gladly helping guests change to a room that would best suit their stay. We do our best to remedy any hitches in our guests stay as soon as possible, and we apologize that your stay was not as memorable as we would hope.

Thank you again for your feedback and we will be looking further into the points you highlighted in your review. We hope to welcome you again in the future and provide you with a stay that suits your needs and provide a wonderful stay.

Until then, best wishes and safe travels.
