“A Grand Castle in the Carolinas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

This place just oozes coolness. The property and the facilities make you feel like you have arrived at an English Castle. The Estate is gorgeous but the staff, with their warm Southern charm and hospitality, make this a 5 star property. I would want my kids to go to Wake Forest over other schools so that I could visit them every month and stay at Graylyn....just kidding, but not really. This place is amazing. The only thing that could be improved upon is the workout facility. It is too small and not well equipped. The concierge staff know everything about the area and they will gladly use the hotel's car to take guests around to local sights.

If you are visiting Wake Forest University, you have to stay at Graylyn! It's one of the most beautiful hotels we've ever stayed in and the staff is amazing! It's true what they say about "Southern Hospitality"! The property and it's intimate size puts this hotel into a class of its own, with no comparison! It doesn't feel like a hotel, but instead, it's like being an honored guest in someone's elegant estate! The buffet breakfast was delicious and eating in the Manor house makes you feel like royalty, living back in time. We loved the complimentary ice cream. How did they know our favorite childhood ice cream bars?!! Our only regret was that we couldn't stay more days!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Mews and loved it. But we'd love to try the cottages and Manor house on anothe...

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Graylyn while visiting the area for the "Vintage in the Vineyards" historic BMW owners' event. We stayed in the main house and we were stunned at how over-the-top beautiful and elegant the Graylyn truly is. There were several weddings going on at the time, but that just added to the excitment and warmth of the stay. We felt like we had the place to ourselves at times. The place is like a European villa or castle as well as a museum. The staff loves to show you around and explains all of the unnbelievable architecture and interior decor and art. All the staff treated us like royality and tended to our every whim with a warmth and sincerity very rarely experienced. The breakfast was excellent. The rooms were perfect. We enjoyed spending hours roaming around inside and outside exploring and enjoying. It was a magical experience. The price was perfect and based on how great everything was - a real bargain. It just couldn't have been better. I am hesitant to let this secret out because I don't want the Graylyn to get too popular and make it too crowded and harder for us to have that feeling that it belonged to us for that weekend. I want to return and enjoy it again and again.

Room Tip: spend a lil extra to stay in the main house!

I went to Winston-Salem with my boyfriend for a Vintage BMW event and we opted to stay at the Graylyn Hotel just outside of the downtown area. When you turn into the entrance, it feels magical. This enormous estate with the Manor House, several cottages and other buildings - all made of stone and beautifully designed; and situated on land that is beautifully manicured. There is so much history in this property! The antiques are beautiful. This is a luxury property with so much to explore and admire. Walking the grounds or walking through any of the main buildings is an adventure! There are information sheets the staff members will provide that shares historical facts and trivia about various aspects of the manor.

When we arrived, there were 2 weddings that evening - one at the Muse building and one at the Manor House. The staff greeted us and made sure we knew where to find the coffee room that has free ice cream 24/7! Each staff person we spoke with talked about Graylyn with such pride and a genuine desire for others to find it as romantic and beautiful as they do.

There are so many areas to capture beautiful pictures. The circular stairwell is really something to behold - as is the gazebo out back.

The bed was extremely comfortable and we both slept so well! The rooms are beautifully decorated.

We plan to return next year for our anniversary. This is such an authentic and beautiful estate and it doesn't have the touristy feel that many other historic estates have. We look forward to our return next year.

We were on our way to Myrtle Beach and anticipating staying at this historical place as it was our 50th wedding anniversary. We arrived about 3:15, told room not ready- fine we went across the street to see the attractions there. The grounds and buildiing appear beautiful as you enter property, however, inside, neither the furniture or building were not polished, not clean in appearance. At 4:00, told room ready- we were directed to cottage which appeared to be well taken care of, nice bathroom, furniture, up-to-date paint, however, when we pulled down the covers, the sheets were wrinkled, had numerous black hairs on sheets, muddy shoe prints by the bed, and other unmentionable item on comforter. We were obviously waiting for someone to finish a tryst and they didn't bother to clean it up. After requesting clean sheets, we found more disgusting things so we asked not to be charged and left- Employees were not geared to customer satisfaction! This place is basically beautiful and has great potential if properly managed!

I stayed at Graylyn in June, 2012 and wrote a review entitled "Graylyn Rocks!". I had the good fortune of staying there once again May 3-5 and I'm pleased to report "Graylyn Still Rocks!" Graylyn is a wonderful old historic estate built of stone so it, does indeed, literally rock! The Estate is stunning and magnificent. The grounds (55 acres) are beautifully maintained and, combined with the interior of the estate, is an invitation to a life of magnificent luxury. As a guest of the Estate, one can quite literally be caught up in the ambiance of "Donwton Abbey." The Graylyn staff is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and always very helpful. Meals are exquisite and well worth the price. My wife and I have enjoyed many of the finest hotels in the USA and abroad but we would choose Graylyn over any others. Reynolda Village and Reynolda Museum of American Art and many other museums and attractions, e.g., SECCA (Southeast Center for Contemporay Art) and SciWorks, are within easy walking distance. The NC wine country (Yadkin Valley Appellation) is 30 minutes away. UNC School of the Arts (with its 400+ drama, film, music and dance performances annually) is 10 minutes away as is Old Salem. Wake Forest University is 5 minutes away. Our past visit was because the Estate was chosen as the location for the NC Chapter of the Knights of the Vine Grand Assemblage and the event was truly Grand! We enjoyed our stay very much!

Room Tip: Rooms in the Manor House can range from very large and spacious to relatively small, depending on lu...

The Graylyn is magical and much more than a luxury hotel. The restored manor house and mews transports you to another place and time; you have to experience it's beauty as it is impossible to express in words. The grounds, the rooms, which have modern amenities, and the service make you feel pampered and very special. My husband and I have stayed here 4 times, visiting our daughter at Wake Forest, and have had a truly memorable stay each time. We never want to leave and will plan to visit the Graylyn for many years; even when our daughter is not in Winston Salem as the Graylyn is too special not to go back to.

Room Tip: We love the Mews, but have also had a beautiful room in the Manor House.
