“Not the best experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

Arrived to tour Old Salem and stopped here first to put our name on the list for lunch. There were 7 of us. We were told to expect to wait 45 minutes. We signed in and then went walking around the town. When we came back after 45 minutes, we waited and waited and waited! Unfortunately by this time we were all very hungry but did not want to load all of us up in the car and go searching for a restaurant. There was very little communication with us...would we like to split up our group?, Sorry, but we are unable to accommodate a large group today but we suggest you try the sandwich shop?, etc. We did not know what other options were available...our first visit to the area. Finally, we were seated after apprx. 11/2 hrs. Then the waiting really began...we had to ask them to bring a basket of rolls/muffins for the kids...waited another 35 minutes for our food...sandwiches were good but fries were cold...one order was wrong and when we requested it be corrected we were told that it would take another 20 or so minutes. Overall, it was not a good dining experience. To the credit of the management, they did comp our entire bill. Based on other reviews, I think we just hit this restaurant at an "off time" and with a busy day they should have been more realistic about being able to accommodate our group. The yeast rolls and the muffins were delicious and my pimento cheese sandwich was very good. My husband had the catfish and said that it was very bland. Kids just had hamburgers so no big deal there except for the cold fries that came with the burgers.

“Lovely restaurant, lovely food...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

Very quaint restaurant located in Old Salem, a historic village in Winston-Salem. The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. I had the honey pecan chicken salad on a croissant with warm german potato salad. The only drawback: we were there for my mother's birthday and we brought cupcakes per her request - we were told that there would be a $10 surcharge just for having them there. We took them out to the car and ate them outside in the freezing cold as a matter of principle because that was a bit ridiculous... but otherwise we had a great experience. Have some of the hot apple cider! Yum.

“Good family option”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

This restaurant had a kid's menu with several good options. The grilled pear salad was delicious!! Love the quaint setting and decor :)

Brat was ridiculous but we could have skipped the gumbo. They were out of the pumpkin ginger soup we were dying to try!

“Great Food and Service in Authentic Historical Setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

I visited The Tavern for lunch with a group. While not my first visit to Old Salem itself, this was my first time eating at The Tavern. All in all it was a wonderful experience. The staff was dressed in period costumes and were very friendly and attentive.

The food was wonderful. I ordered the Roasted Turkey, Brie and Fig on Ciabatta. I was a little worried about the fig, but it was sweet and very subtle. A perfect companion to the Brie. I had the sweet potato fries as a side and they were equally delicious. Another person in our party ordered the Carolina Barbeque Dip. He considers himself a bit of a BBQ expert and was worried if he'd like this one. He ended up giving it two thumbs up. He said it was delicious! Another person in our group ordered the Pot Roast sandwich. They said it was very tasty and it surely looked very substantial. All of the food looked appealing and were reasonably priced. There were no complaints in our group. There are free refills on the soft drinks.

After lunch, a few of the staff were pleased to pose for photos with some of our group. It made for a wonderful addition to a tour of the village!

“Awesome dining experience in Old Salem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

We found The Tavern In Old Salem by chance while walking down Main Street. We stopped in for lunch. The food, service and historic setting made it a top notch dining experience. It was so good we went back the next night for dinner! The German Beer Soup and mini pumpkin muffins were delicious! We will definitely go back for more !
