“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2011

I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past few years. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the location is great. The hotel has its own parking deck across the street and is well lit with plenty of spaces. The hotel has breakfast every morning and it is always delicious and well stocked even towards the end of the breakfast times. The staff is so accommodating; if you need anything you will have it within minutes! I really enjoy my stay every time I am here.

It was easy to get to the hotel off the interstate, although the one-way streets in Winston-Salem made navigation a little tricky at times. The parking deck is across the street, and not very convenient, but luckily, we had little luggage. Breakfast was decent - much better than a "continental" breakfast. Only negative was the extremely loud slamming doors. They slammed so loudly, it seemed as if there no insulation. However, adjacent room noise was not a problem. The beds were WONDERFUL and the room was plenty big enough for two adults.

The rooms are very dark and dated. The couch was missing legs on one side, the tv did not work properly. Bed spread had dirty spots and room looked overall unkempt. Carpet was torn or dirty and halls seemed in need of paint job and needed repair. Night shift male at front desk did not seem to care about room issues. Stayed on the phone with personal calls while guests waited for assistance. Would not stay here again!

This hotel felt more like an historical inn...I loved the location and the area...the gentleman, Gary, at the front desk was very nice and helpful too. I loved the fact that I could run the air condition as cold as I liked, and it wouldn't shut off, and that's a plus for me! I found that if I placed the hotel directory inside the window, with the curtains behind it, that it would keep the curtains from flying around...next time I will bring one of those huge plastic "clothes line clips" that you get from the dollar store...I love those...

If TripAdvisor had an option to give 1/2 point ratings, I'd have given the Wingate a 3.5. It was a good choice for our family weekend getaway.

The pluses: The location is great: easy exit off the highway and walkable to interesting places downtown. We were greeted by a very friendly gentleman upon arrival and the woman working the desk at check-out was also lovely. The room was large and comfortable, if not the latest fashion, and it was quiet at night. One quirk: it's odd to have a microwave but no mini-fridge (looks like there was a space where it used to be). The free WIFI worked well and free breakfast was what you'd expect with many packaged choices (eggs would be a nice addition).

The minuses: While everything smelled clean, there was mildew in the bathtub grout and a few stray black hairs in the tub, which always creeps me out. As others have mentioned, having the parking garage around the corner isn't convenient. It seems like a safe area, but I would not have been comfortable walking by myself at night.

The hotel was ok......nothing to brag about. It was not very spacious and did not have the modern amenities but it was ok. The spa was luke warm and the breakfast really sucked. The location is difficult to find and the parking is ackward since it is not even on the property but across the street behind the building and it is limited.

I stopped her on my way home from a road trip from ATL. The hotel was very easy to locate. We were surprised with the space in the room. A typical hotel room with two beds has enough space to touch the other. This room was large enough almost to squeeze another bed in between the beds lol.

My ONLY complaint was the parking garage BEHIND the hotel. The first time I walked to and from the parking garage during the daytime, no problem... But THAT NITE!!! my mother was the only person who traveled with me and because of her health, it was too much of a walk for her so I had to drop her off. It's not lit well out there and a there is a large tree that obstructs your vision when you're trying to be 'aware of your surroundings' I parked my car in the dimly lit parking garage and began to cross the street the get to the hotel and as I'm walking a man is opening his car door (parked at the corner of the street right in front of where I have to go to get to the back door of the hotel) and gets out to get his Pit Bull out of the backseat... I was terrified. Thankfully he nor the dog bothered me but for a moment, I felt like I was in a movie lol WINGATE YOU NEED SOME SECURITY BACK THERE, MORE LIGHTS OR AN OVERPASS THAT CONNECTS TO THE HOTEL.... SOMETHING!! outside of that, I had a pleasant overnight stay :)
