“The Good, Bad & Neutral”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

The positive: The staff was friendly and helpful. The view from the seventh floor looking down to Old Salem was nice. Loved having a Keurig in the suite. The wifi was free and fast. The price was reasonable.

The negative: Upon arrival our sofa bed clearly had been slept in and not changed. Our suite needed serious renovations. Dirty furniture. Slow drains. The headboard of my son's bed fell off the wall in the middle of the night scarring us. Old dirty bathroom fixtures, etc.

The neutral: The "on-site restaurant" mentioned on their website wasn't a real restaurant. It was only opened a few hour in the mornings for a small boring buffet.

Thank you so much for taking the time to complete this helpful review. I so appreciate your positive observations, especially regarding our staff, I’m probably a little bias but they are second to none.
I also appreciate your negative observations. They will only make us better. I apologize for the headboard incident, and have spoken to our Maintenance dept. that will make certain all are secured. We are in the process of room renovations and all of your concerns will be addressed. Our Bayberry Bistro now has a Complimentary Hot Breakfast. The Bistro has extended hrs. which are 6am to 2pm and 5pm-10pm.
Please give us a 2nd chance to Wow you.
Sincerely, Helena Sims

I was sent to this hotel from another local hotel due to overbooking late at night. Staff members at Hawthorne already had everything ready for me when I arrived and were polite and friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. My package came with a free buffet-style breakfast, which was okay although it would be nicer to diversify food choices. There was also a big parking lot outside the hotel so parking was a breeze and made driving to downtown very convenient. Would definitely return.

We enjoyed our stay. Keep working on the breakfast menu. The potatoes the first were not very good. My wife commented that they looked like dog food. The tast was bland at best. Eggs are over cooked two. But the hospitality could not be beat. Great staff at check in and the dining room. Cleaning staff was great as well. Never saw them, but you knew they were there by how clean everything was. Hate to go home now and see what a mess my house is.

A very good location to walk around and tour Old Salem NC and the several good restaurants and coffee shops nearby....,only1/4 to 1.5 mile walk to many places. The front staff is friendly , the room we had was clean and quiet. There was a refrigerator and microwave in the room. The beds were fairly comfortable. THe ac and heat system worked well and was quiet. My only complaint was the included breakfast buffet was not very good. The oatmeal cool(need a deeper covered container ) and not the long pan. THe eggs cool and the coffee not very good. They did have yogurt , sweets and I had peanut butter on a raisin bagel so I did find food I could eat. They do have breakfast meats, biscuits and sweets for those who want a heavier breakfast. THe room coffee we fixed in the room the next day tasted fine plus the coffee shops near by have excellent coffee options. I can't comment on other meals. Except for the breakfast... I found this place to be a good place to stay without being overly expensive.

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs and facing the back toward Old Salem are very quiet and nice view too.

Yes, the facility is a little dated, so if you love everything to be shiny and brand new, look for another place to stay. However this place is by no means run down, and in fact I found it to be really quite nice. But the thing that sticks out the most is that the staff managed to convey a genuine welcoming feeling that was far beyond the typical "coached" or "forced" smiles and service. I'll take kindness over shiny any day. Thanks Hawthorne people!

The hotel has the feel of a 1970s hotel. The place is dated. The room I had the bed was old and the pillows smelled of cologne. The fridge made a high pitch squeal on and off through out the night. The breakfast bar was small and limited choices but I was happy it had crispy bacon. The TV was small but at least all channels were HD.

In general its an ok place to stay but they (Wake Forrest owns it) need to spend some money and update it especially the beds and pillows..

Room Tip: fifth floor is the best, on the skyline side, nice view at night
