“Great service... Great food”
We just happened to stumble upon Gloria's Italian Restaurant, and were not sure what to expect from the exterior of the building. The building looked like it could have been formerly a fast food restaurant (I found our later that it had been a branch bank), but we decided to try our luck.
We were immediately greeted by a very upbeat hostess/waitress who offered us seating of our choice. As we sat, she gave us the menus and asked/received our drink order. She quickly returned with our drinks, asked us if we needed more time, and told us to take all the time we needed. She told us about several specials and left us to make our choices. It's great to be handled by a professional.
I chose one of the specials - only one order left - braised short ribs with a mixed greens salad, and my wife ordered the Scalopine Parmigiana with a Caesar salad. The salads arrived quickly and were fresh and generously sized - mine with the house dressing served on the side... as it should be. The salads were very good.
My wife almost always orders the parmigiana when we eat at an Italian restaurant as it is her favorite... and we can often use it as a gauge as to her overall rating of an establishment. She immediately said she would never have a problem with returning to Gloria's... the Scalopine Parmigiana was great!
The braised short ribs were also delicious... I fully understand why there was only one serving left at 8pm! The ribs were so tender they were falling apart, and were served with a yum-producing gravy. Many people do not appreciate the true art of rice cooking, but thankfully, Gloria's does. The bed of rice was very generous - although I could have eaten more - and the rice was perfectly firm withour being crisp, but with absolutely no hint of "mushiness"... I love good rice and this was incredible.
My wife would be willing to drive back to Gloria's every night of the year for the Tiramisu. I have never heard her go on and on about the perfection of the Tiramisu in any other italian restaurant like she did with Gloria's. I had the carrot cake and found it to be good... but I have had better. I think it was provided by an off-site vendor of desserts.
Don't let the "bank building" appearance fool you. The food at Gloria's is tremendous and the service is among the most professional and pleasing we encountered in our recent visit to Wilmington.
