Today I took my grandaughter to the Tregembo Animal Park. It was so sad and I felt utterly helpless to help the poor animals. It is the worst zoo I have ever been too. It held a close second to the very worst zoo I have ever been to in Japan where the elephant may have had a 12x12 foot area to live in. The part of the zoo that was bad was the fact that the bears has no room. But the very very worst were the big cats. The white tiger was pacing his small cage helpless, anxious, with nothing to do or look at and he was having difficulty walking...due to an injury or no room to exercise? People had gathered at the other tiger's cage to remark about his lack of muscle tone...his back legs and hind quarters were withering due to lack of exercise. I cried when I reached the jaguar cage and felt more sadness for them that the others as they looked as if they had given up all hope and wished they were dead. The caged birds had no toys. One group of monkeys who we gave a peanut too pounced, all together, on the peanut and acted as if they were hungry. I asked the zoo keeper on the grounds why the sloth was in a 5 x 5 foot cage? He looked like he weighed 30 pounds and was very large and had no room at all. I left with a broken heart that will take days to heal. Someone needs to at least remove the large cats from this awful place. I live in the area and will pray daily that someone does something and plan to look into who can address this cruel situation here in Wilmington.
