We've been here three years. It was nice in the beginning... 3.5 stars, perhaps. Since our experiences there (we may have been there about 7 times) were mediocre, we haven't been back in about a year.
My appetizer: Duck Spring Rolls 8
Crispy spring rolls with savory duck breast confit, parmesan cheese & Asian cabbage salad atop wasabi whipped potatoes, hoisin plum sauce. A real treat! ==> The plum sauce was way too sweet and I did not touch it anymore than my food did. What duck? The rolls were crispy and lovely looking but I could not taste the duck at all. The potatoes were okay and unmentionable.
Napoleon Beet Stack 7
Stack of roasted beets layered with herb chevre cheese, tahini dressing & roasted pumpkin seeds.==> It was fine but the Lexington Ave. Brewery does a far better job when they have their beet and goat cheese on their menu.
A traditional Greek dish of seasoned ground beef layered with sliced eggplant, béchamel and baked until golden brown. Finished with feta cheese.==> My friend said she saw my face when I took the first bite. The cinnamon and salt overpowered the dish. I could've dealt with the cinnamon and tried to eat more but the salt was horrible.
Another friend ordered the lamb shank and a friend ordered a tomato and mushroom dinner. My hearing is bad but in the car they clearly said both of their dishes were over salted but they ate it. Their salad dressings were bland.
The waitress was outstanding. The food (which included an after dinner drink a friend had had before but now had little alcohol in it and salads with bland dressings) was somewhere in the $70 range with tip, it was close to $90. Their conclusion (mine, too), with so many superior restaurants in Asheville, we're never going back to Stoney Knob.
I've had worse (Doc Chey's, Noodle Palace, and now Champas is off our list) but for the price we all expected better.
By the way, for lunch recently, I had fried chicken with a lot of salt. Salt typically doesn't bother me. So, I know this was overkill.
Get over the stupid decor, too. While this didn't change my rating, a pabst blue ribbon rotating sign among odd decorations? It's no long neat or eclectic, it's stupid and cheap and I'm not falling for it. Had to rate the atmosphere. After Doc Cheys (poor) and Noodle Palace (poor), it fell between a 2 - 3.
