“Another fantastic visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

We visited The Swag last year for our anniversary and had such a good time that we visited again this year for my birthday. This is such a special place to visit - my husband and I both love it. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Definitely! We stayed in a different room this time - The Rock Room. This is a wonderful large room. We had a fireplace which they lay every day with a loveseat and a couch beside it. Such a great place to sit after hiking all day. We had a terrace outside of our room where we could look out at the yard and mountains. Food was great again this year and they always remember you on a special occasion with a little gift and a special table. This year we were there for the Wednesday cookout on top the mountain and I HIGHLY recommend doing that. We had a beautiful clear day and enjoyed the views and the food. We also hiked to the top of Hemphill Bald which has spectacular views. The inn will pack you a lunch to hike or you can have it up the tree house or anywhere you like. The owners are warm and welcoming and I cannot say enought nice things about this very special and lovely inn.

Room Tip: All rooms are great - it just depends how large a room you want and how much you want to spend!

“Outstanding and unique”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

On the surface the Swag seems expensive; however it is an inn like no other. The food is very good and generally locally sourced. The rooms are beautifully appointed if you like the natural look (I do). The hiking is excellent. It is all inclusive so no need to go to town. The hosts take a very personal interest in their guests and do an unbelievable job of remembering names. We truly enjoyed the fireplace and the in room coffee maker with fresh beans. Hint: if you like wine with dinner, be sure to bring your own. Also, keep an eye on your bottle once opened. Ours was mistakenly consumed by another guest on this trip so we had no wine for dinner. Very disappointing especially since our server was a bit surly when questioned about it and implied we had drunk it since the bottle was empty and in the trash.

“Good but not what we expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

In early October we topped off a week of NC sightseeing with two nights at The Swag. We had
long anticipated the stay since it has hosted many notables, has many good reviews in various
evaluating entities such as TA, and should provide a unique experience for the price paid.
In many ways our expectations were met. The rustic facilities are located in a glorious setting,
and we enjoyed some early leaf color in the high area. Our room, Danny's Room, was quite
adequate and amenities were what you would expect in a top notch inn. All staff members were
caring, well informed, and obviously focused on making the stay a memorable experience.
Deener was a truly gracious owner and hostess who spent much time in orchestrating guest
compatibility, for example the dinner seating plan for each evening. We were fortunate that
during our stay an excellent story teller entertained after dinner with stories of his nearby NC
heritage. He also led several hikes and was a great source of flora and fauna knowledge of
the area. The reason we did not rate our experience as excellent was our disappointment with
some of the food. Our initial meal, dinner, was their weekly barbeque and designed to be
cooked outside, served in the the dog trot, and consumed inside. Unfortunately a dip in temperature created problems with the logistics and food temps. They corrected this the
following week by moving things inside. We also were most disappointed in the lunches,
provided as a sack or backpack opportunity. We found the bread to be soggy in the
sandwiches, and in the case of the chicken salad sandwich, the chicken salad was in minute
quantity. After having enjoyed similar hiking fare at locations like the Inn at Blackberry Farm,
we were disappointed. We thoroughly enjoyed a terrific breakfast layout, with many choices
and to order items. Our second evening meal was also very good. We have concluded that
we perhaps had raised our expectations too high on the food end, but the food just did not meet the rest of the inn's standards. If you look for a tranquil, rustic setting with great hiking
opportunities and excellent service The Swag fills the bill. Hopefully your food experience will
be better than ours,

“Just not worth the price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

It was all ok, just not at these prices. Food was ok, rooms ok, service ok, price not ok. I stay at a lot of nice places and this place just can't justify the price. Read the other poor reveiws, they are on target.

“Didn't stay there but paid $20 th hike and for a box lunch”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

To hike from The Swag you have to pay $20. In addition to some fairly good trails and very nice grounds with great views, you get a box lunch to take with you when you hike.

The box lunch was terrible. I had a tasteless veggie wrap that was mostly lettuce. The coleslaw was tastes and those of us who had potato salad said it was also tasteless.

You can go there for dinner ($59.95). But if the dinner is anything like the lunch I had-- forget it.
