“Beautiful country retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

This was our second stay at the Swag. The staff is well trained and extremely friendly and will go out of their way to see that your stay is memorable. Unfortunately we stayed in Laurin's Room which was had a sloping floor and was cramped and uncomfortable, unlike the fabulous Family Room from our last visit. The room was, however, very well appointed and had a very nice 2 person steam shower. My husband and I desperately wanted everything to be as wonderful as our first visit, but I'm afraid it fell short. Our dinners and lunches were hit and miss, but the breakfast still exceptional. Deener and Dan are wonderful, generous, gracious hosts and although I have registered some complaints, I would still tell everyone this a place you should visit. The grounds are spectacular and the hiking fun. This is a wonderful place to stay if you are interested in a tranquil and quiet environment, not for those looking for excitement or a myriad of activities..

Room Tip: Try to stay either in a cottage or a room with a balcony, otherwise you will feel claustrophobic.

My husband and I spent our 15th anniversary at The Swag, a beautiful and reenergizing retreat. It is a long, winding drive up a narrow dirt road; the inn property is right on the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park--you could throw a stone from the inn porch and it would land in the park.

What we like most about the Swag is the hiking. They have several lovely hikes on the property and into the Park, ranging from easy to difficult. It is very rewarding to do a hike and then come back and enjoy the homemade cookies for tea, and the lovely dinner (dry county, so BYOB). Personally, I do not want to leave the mountain when we go to The Swag. If I wanted to do a lot of area sightseeing, I would probably stay closer to town (whatever town that might be--Asheville or Waynesville) instead of going up and down that mountain road. Maybe if we were staying for more than a weekend I would be tempted to venture out more, but the on-site amenities are so nice. (They will bring in a masseuse for you, too!) We were fortunate to be at The Swag when famed storyteller Donald Davis was in residence (I gather he does this a couple times a year)--he leads hikes and tells stories after dinner.

Our particular room had a gorgeous view out across the property and the valley, with a nice porch for two, a stocked fireplace, a bathroom with a whirlpool and a steam shower. We were in a separate building from the main inn, with a nice sitting area that we could have used but did not need to with our own lovely room; if we were with friends, this building would be a good central group location.

Every morning, you sign up for what you would like for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is a buffet, lunch is packed for you, and dinner is a 4-course meal. Cocktail hour on the porch before dinner (they provide cheeses, shellfish like oysters or shrimp, canapes, etc, you provide your own drinks) is a nice time to catch up with other guests, and I also like that you get a table to yourself for dinner some nights, and then you sit at a communal table other nights.

The owners and staff are so welcoming and gracious--I am impressed at Deener's constant energy! All of the staff went out of their way to be helpful. We will be back!

Dan and Deener are excellent hosts at this beautiful getaway. The views from several locations on the property are breathtaking and the staff does an excellent job taking care of your needs. The food was delicious and the history lessons from Dan reveal a glimpse into the past that we'll never forget.

Room Tip: We stayed in the TwoStory; very happy with it.

We live in Asheville and are natives here. We had not been there so we visited for my husband's 50th birthday. The setting is spectacular! The appetizers were on the dog trot of the porch and they were just perfect! A good variety and lots of flavors too!
The inside the dining room for dinner. The views are amazing, and the food, well we were very happy! Fresh sea bass and rack of lamb and I am embarrassed to say from the salad, soup then dinner and dessert, we were very impressed and happy with our choice for this special occasion.
It is everything I had hoped it would be! We will be back again and again!

Room Tip: We were dinner only

The Swag delivers such a unique experience that it needs to be recognized for what it represents: a genuine treasure of Americana. The setting is extraordinary, and the architecture blends seamlessly into the environment. More importantly, everything about The Swag celebrates history and nature. During our week-long 35th Anniversary stay, a naturalist and storyteller both visited, and provided a unique experience. Dan Matthews is a semi- retired minister, and his pastoral qualities stand out in the way he engages guests. However, the real secret of the Swag is his tireless wife Deener, who truly has a "ministry of hospitality" in the way that she cares for her guests. No detail is overlooked, and she takes a genuine interest in getting to know visitors in a way that is welcoming, not intrusive. That ethos permeates every member of the staff. The food is creative and first rate. We traveled from Philadelphia to experience the Swag, and it was well worth the trip.

The innkeepers are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Staff helpful in every way.
Chef know his business. Buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner were superb. One of the nicest inns you will find. We have stayed in many and this has to rate in the top three for uniqueness, food, decor and service. Stayed in Ridgeview. Great view. Lots of hiking and Waynesville is a nice town for shopping.Could go on but would only repeat the glowing reviews of others.
