Headwaters Brewery is one of three micro-breweries now open and serving in Waynesville, NC. Headwaters just opened earlier during 2012, and in my opionion is the best of the three micro-breweries. They have a fairly large selection of craft brew available all the time, including seasonal beers such as the pumpkin beer, high gravity IPAs, and ales, ciders, and lighter brews in between. The brewmaster/owner delivers some exceptionally good beer at a very reasonable price. Most beers are $4.00/pint.
The brewery is locaed on a street in a warehouse area, Frazier Street, behind the Sagebrush Steakhouse, on Russ Avenue, just about a quarter mile toward downtown Waynesville from US Highway 74. You actually turn on Frazier right beside the Sagebrush parking lot. The brewery is at the righthand end of some small warehouses. Looks are deceiving, because inside the brewery, the decor is that of of Kyaking theme. There is a nice size bar with addtional tall tables and picnic-style tables. Plenty of room for a lot of people, and there is a bar basketball game and two dart boards for gaming.
The bartender is very accomodating and pleasant. One of the great items at the bar are the hot dogs cooked in some of the craft beer. Not sure the brand of hot dogs, or if their taste is a direct result of cooking them in great beer, but the dogs are absolutely delicious, and served on fresh, warmed buns. Condiments are available, but limited. Also available are a varitey of chips and pretzels.
One thing that is great for non-beer drinkers is that the brewery makes it's own rootbeer and it is really good.
Various websites give erroneous information concerning the open dates and times for Headwaters. The brewery is now open and serves beginning at 4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 1:00 pm on Saturdays. Open til 11pm each day, and closed on Sundays and Wednesdays. It might be beneficial to give them a call before going, because on a rare occasion the bar will not open until 5pm. (828) 246-0602
The brewery is not fancy, but very clean and comfortable, with a very friendly staff, and it's a fun place to have a few delicious craft beers and hotdogs. You should try it if you like micro-brews!
