My husband and I were in Waynesville for the first time, staying at a local B&B for our anniversary. We didn't have dinner reservations planned and it was a Saturday afternoon, so the B&B owner recommended the Bourbon Barrel for dinner, and it is a place he enjoys eating at (he loves the meatloaf). He made us a reservation and we arrived on time. I will say that granted, it was 7:15pm on a Saturday night, but why would they offer that time a few hours in advance if they wouldn't be able to handle the crowd? We arrived, and were seated even while others waited for a table, which we appreciated. However, a larger group arrived after us with no reservation and was seated next to us, received their food and left before our entrees ever arrived!
Pro's: Excellent waitress, she kept us informed while we waited and was very professional, and kind.
The escargot appetizer was delicious.
The B&B owner told them that we were traveling for our anniversary so the owner gave us two complimentary glasses of prosecco in our first 30 min, which we appreciated.
The waitress adjusted our bill generously (read on for details).
Con's: Our entrees came a full hour after we ordered them, and one was ruined.
While waiting for a long while, we asked to speak with a manager and it turned out that the restaurant owner wanted to know why we were concerned, so she came over to talk to us. Once she discovered that we were concerned about why our entrees were so delayed, her attitude changed and she seemed displeased. She promised to find out what was going on in the kitchen, but she never returned: she left it up to the waitress to communicate with us from that point forward! We felt bad for the waitress, and we were very kind to her, even leaving her a nice tip.
When our entrees did arrive, my order was warm, but my husband had ordered the special and it was stone cold. The fish was dried out (probably from sitting under a heat lamp for too long) and the orzo side was as cold as a cold pasta salad should be! We split my stuffed pepper, which was good, but a little bland tasting. Why should a stuffed pepper on the permanent menu and a simple fish special we've made at home in 15 min take an hour to prepare in a professional kitchen?
Result: The waitress got my husband's order taken off of the bill, and she comp'd the cost of our escargot appetizer, even though we said she didn't have to do that. We paid for my entree and our wine and left her a nice tip.
We won't dine here again when we visit Waynesville in the future. I think that the owner should have come back with the explanation she promised. I especially don't think it was right that she hung the waitress out to dry. It was crowded and loud, so if you like that kind of atmosphere then it's a good option for you, but for a quiet romantic dinner I'd recommend making reservations somewhere else. I should have trusted the Trip Advisor community and heeded other reviews, but I didn't want to offend the B&B owner and assumed he knew better. After all, when we arrived at the restaurant, he was just leaving and had enjoyed his meatloaf very much so we were hopeful. Maybe we caught them on an off-night, but I wouldn't take a chance here for a nice anniversary dinner.
