“Great day out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

I love these caves - guides are always friendly and knowledgeable and always an enjoyable day. The crowds can sometimes be a little off-putting though - especially when there are school trips.

“Fun visit if you are in the area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

After enjoying a fun afternoon of ziplining at the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour, we decided to stop by the Sterkfontein Caves on the way back to Johannesburg. The tour was a little pricey (R140) for what you get. The guide was very professional and knowledgeable, and she took us down the stairs to the caves for a total duration of about 45 minutes. She told us about the discovery of the almost complete skull of an adult female "Mrs Ples" and later the discovery of a near complete skeleton of a second species of Australopithecus, "Little Foot". There are no remants in the caves, but you can see some neat stalactite formations (by no means extraordinary). The Sterkfontein caves are one of the richest sites in the world for early hominids (~500 hominids) and was nominated as a world heritage site - very impressive. However, with that fact aside, the tour simply consists of walking through a typical cave.

Dear Smirshner

Many thanks for posting your review of the Sterkfontein Caves.

As you have mentioned in your review, the Sterkfontein Caves are part of the World Heritage Site. As such, we are governed by very strict Management guidelines and are expected to ensure that the caves are kept in their original condition. This process is governed by UNESCO and lighting is a massive contributor to the degradation of the environment inside the caves.

I hope you return 'home' in the future to revisit the caves

Regards

Tony

“Trip to Sterkfontein Caves.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

I am National Tour Guide and Operator and I recently took International Tourists to spend the morning at the caves , it was well organised and the tour was well presented. They enjoyed themselves immersed in the depths of the caves.

“Worth a visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

The initial appearance of the offices and shop is very stark and uninviting...lots of brick and not a single photo of the caves or what to expect to be seen!
Although pricey for local South Africans, well worth a visit, even if the caves were not as large or impressive as some others we have visited.

“Good experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

Well worth a visit to the home of some of South Africa's oldest hominoid fossils. We enjoyed an informative tour of the caves, with an excellent guide who brought the story alive. There are a couple of places where you have to duck and bend to get through a small space, but it's really not difficult. There's a small exhibit area which tells the story of mankind's evolution. If you plan to visit the Moropeng Museum, about 10 minutes drive away, then go for the combined ticket, which saves a few rand. Entrance for students and seniors is half price.
