“Beautiful location.. friendly staff.. hotel has minor identity crisis..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2012

We went for a weekend break with a voucher which gave us a double for 600 rand. At that price it was good value, though I wouldn't be keen to pay the rack rate of around 1,100 rand ppn.

The hotel is in a stunning location in the Cradle of Humankind, and is well designed so every room looks out over the veld through wall-to-ceiling windows. The rooms are very comfortable and modern with huge beds, nice linen and decent bathrooms and have little patios out the back to watch the sunset. There is free and fast wifi throughout.

The place was pretty busy - probably because of the voucher deal - which meant the restaurant was packed when we went for dinner. The food was good, the atmosphere was great and the staff were lovely.

Breakfast was the usual hotel buffet fare, with bubbly wine and loads of fruit juice options. It was a little overpriced, but we ate out on the deck and the view was amazing.

The only odd thing about the place is that it doesn't quite seem to know what it wants to be. It had the vague feel of a business hotel yet isn't near any business centre, and probably isn't quite luxurious or casual enough to pull off being a holiday hotel. The result is a pool and sun deck which feels a little too small and is slightly crammed in behind reception, reception staff who are matter-of-fact and frantic rather than personable and friendly, and rooms which are lovely but feel slightly too close together when there appears to be no shortage of space.

That said, we had a great weekend away and loved the setting. From the bedrooms, pool and restaurant you can see no other buildings - just fields, hills and a huge sky. It's only an hour or so from Joburg, the scenery is fantastic and the hotel is a relaxing place to stay.

We stayed there this past weeked on a special deal (room rate R600) and for that price it was very good. I would however not pay the rack rate of R1,800 per night.

Staff at the hotel - all good, but they do look a bit shocked to see people and it is as they dont really know what is expected of them. You get the feeling the manager is on leave...

Food is not great, but do go to The Cradle restaurant. Search for it at www.thecradle.co.za
This place has a view to die for and I simply love it! Its about 15 minutes from Maropeng hotel.

Room Tip: Visit The Cradle restaurant.... best views in the whole area!

The comfort of a 4-star hotel in the tranquil peace of the African bush. The staff offer that typical African friendliness, the rooms are comfortable and the quietness is deafening.
My only complaint about this hotel is the menu versus the actual food - a tiramisu should at least have coffee in it and should not taste like packet caramel pudding - a 3-egg omelet should have 3 eggs in it and not be the size of a small pancake!

Room Tip: With only 24 rooms, they all offer the same view and comfort

First of all, great views.

I stayed at this hotel over Christmas 2011 with my family. When I arrived the hotel was completely empty. Not a lot happening. Later more people arrived but the hotel retained its desolated feel. So excellent of you come to escape from city hectic. Not so suitable for a family with kids.
The low point was however the food. There is a chef with ambition that just doesn’t quite make it. For example, when ordering your meat medium it may arrive anywhere between raw and completely overcooked. Lots of fat used in a simple thing like an omelette and cakes for desert that should have spend 15 more minutes in the oven. Given the pricing of the hotel this was disappointing.

And the thing is… There is not a hole lot of choice to eat elsewhere given that the hotel is pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

The Maropeng visitor centre (very close, entrance included when staying at the hotel), Sterkfontein caves, Rhino and Lion Park where worth it.

Stayed 1 night as part of a tour. Nice hotel. Friendly staff. Service with a smile. Good food. Nice room. Nice terrrace too, with a sign to watch out for snakes in the high grass, and within walking distance to the Cradle of Mankind visitor’s centre. A visit to this centre is certainly worthwhile.

I went on a teambuilding / goal setting trip with my team and I had mixed feelings about this hotel in terms of my total experience. So I will try to be objective in my review.
The element that need to be worked on are practical and can be fixed so I can only hope that they use the feedback to their advantage.

WHAT WAS GOOD

- Rooms: Very spacious, beautiful views, big beds and large bathrooms.
- Hotel: Architecture of the hotel was gorgeous, earthy feel to it
- Ambience: Very quiet, you would never think Johannesburg is so close
- Service: Hotel staff quite attentive and went the extra mile to assist (They let me use their PC after I spent an hour trying to connect via 3G unsuccessfully)
-Closeness to the Cradle of Humankind centre

WHAT NEEDS WORK
-Food: We did not have the best food, especially when it came to dessert; the Malva pudding tasted like egg (or in my colleagues words…”egg that claimed to be Malva pudding!”). Even though the host
replaced it with a bottle of wine…it was cold and we really wanted some warm dessert.
- There was no network and since it was a business trip; this was a deal killer for me
- While the attraction is the Cradle of Humankind, the hotel itself in my perception was not quite family or child friend – it came across as a very formal but also doesn’t balance out the business need for connectivity.

Overall a good hotel but would not be my first choice of accommodation in the area, especially if the above challenges are not addressed.

Hotel is located directly next to UN Heritage Site "Cradle of Mankind" - superb rooms, very clean, friendly staff, good food in restaurant, and stunning views of area from rooms as well as restaurant... We would very much recommend this place.

Our deal price included visit to the museum (on site) as well as the nearby caves - great valuye for money.
