“Everyone should go!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2012

This is a wonderful museum for people of all ages! There are super displays and great information on local History and Maritime facts. Fun pirate stories and displays. Cool artifacts and antiques. We liked it so much we joined. It's free to go but just knowing we have such a treasure in Southport makes me proud. We wanted to donate/join. I recommend everyone go. Check out the cool gift shop, too. Truly....a must see!

“Worth at least an hour of your time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2012

Once located in a cramped, dark and dank spot tucked away from the traffic, the Maritime Museum relocated to Moore Street in a completely remodled, revamped, and reenergized area at Fort Johnson near the water where a maritime museum belongs. The Powers to be in Southport can sometimes go out of their way to screw things up in the quaint downtown but this time they hit a home run with this site. It is 100 times better than its predecessor and the exhibits are interesting as they are informative. There is something for everyone here, the kids, parents and grandpa and grandma. It is easy to spend an hour here browzing and imagining you were an 18th century mariner on the Cape Fear River. There is a gift shop and a weekly lecture, class, of nautical interest at a nominal charge and its location is superb. This area of Southport is the new focal point of downtown and in the summer with the Farmer;s market on the front lawn bodes well for the fortunes of the small businesses in the area. Take the time and go back in time and explore the history and lore of the history of this town and the how the water made this town.

“The newly renovated museum is a jewel in the crown that is Southport!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2011

The museum reopened on July 4th, 2011 and has been a resounding success. All of the displays reflect the immediate area, including the Hollywood Pirates. The staff is exceptionally warm and receptive to visitors. The gift shop has an array of items to please children and discerning adults.

Southport is on the coast of North Carolina. Its a small , lovely town filled with quait shops and beautiful homes. We enjoyed the many shops. Several movies have been made in and around this lovely town and I can understand why! Its well worth the visit.

“Pretty Cool”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2011

Lots of artifacts from local shipwrecks. Military stuff too! There was tons of information about boats, pirates, etc. It only took 30 minutes to tour, but hey, it had AC, and it was free!
