“Great Caravan Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

We started by going to the other caravan park, West Kimberley Lodge Caravan Park.  This Park is very old and has extremely poor management, an and arrogant manager.  We moved to the Kimberley Entrance Caravan Park and what a difference.  This is a modern Park with friendly and competent management.  The facilities are clean and well placed throughout the Park.

The manager is so friendly and even offered us the use of his crab pots.

The difference between the Parks is chalk and cheese.  In fact chalk is too good for the West Kimberley Lodge.  More like a cane toad.

Room Tip: Don't even think about the West Kimberley Lodge and Caravan Park.

We eventually worked out why the reviews are so mixed about this site.
We stayed here for 3 nights. True.. the chap who runs the park is very nice and helpful and the layout of the park is good and the roads within it tarmaced. There is a also one new shower block- they have been very well done and were kept clean..

There appears to be a maintanance team on site but they seem to work in pairs and are definiately more about the ground areas than the general cleanliness of the blocks... The bins were also surrounded by flys , but this could be improved by bin liners being placed in the bins as many campers put unwrapped and un-bagged foods into the bins and the mainteneince men then left them un-emptied until they were full to the brim and in the heat this resulted in flies and smelly bins.....

BUT: the bad; The campers kitchen was without doubt the dirtiest we have come across in over 40 sites and 8 months of travelling, in the three days we were there it was not touched or cleaned yet it sits right outside the site office and we did not use it because of this.... This really affected our stay. The fridges were also dirty, unkempt and rusty and had broken door seals which allowed ants in and the chiller not to work as it should. The freezer areas within the fridges were also dirty and had not been cleaned or touched for ages..

There is also a beautiful white peacock living on site 'Percy' very nice... but not when he is allowed to 'mess and toilet' all over the tables and seats in the campers kitchen area...

The not so good..... The showers blocks other than the middle new one... are old and run down and the disabled facilities are very poor and unclean..

Overall it was ok, but disappointing as we were not able to cook and did not feel able to use the fridges... and in a tent both of these facilities play a big role in a good stay...

The sunset on Derby Jetty is stunning but makes sure you are there for about 5pm as blink or be late and you will miss it. The sun is GONE by 5.30pm... The beach is smelly mud though... so be warned...

Room Tip: Make sure you get a shaded site and have plenty of spray for the flies and mozzies....

We have now stayed here several times as a stop over prior to reaching Broome. We prefer backtracking a little to stay here, instead of spending a night closer to Broome, prior to our Broome reservations.
Owner is very friendly and very helpful in highlighting the things to do in Derby, in addition to anything else you ask about.
The caravan park is well set out and grounds well maintained. Amentities are very good and always clean. They appear to be currently building a number of new sites out the back.
Stayed here recently prior to tackling the Gibb River Road. Owner was happy to provide some guidance in relation to the Gibb River Road.
Highly recommend staying a couple of days.

My parents stayed here prior to our Gibb River Road adventure and we stayed as a family afterwards. The owners bent over backwards to accommodate our needs (one powered site and one un-powered site). We expected to be at opposite ends of the park but they managed to squeeze us in side-by-side during their busiest period with only 1 day notice. Thank you! The facilities are good and the local knowledge was great too - we enjoyed a beautiful dinner at the Windmill Cafe - highly recommend it!

This caravan park services many travellers who are about to or just travelled the Gibbs River Road. It is well set out and has excellent facilities. Cost in June 2012 was $38 for a powered site for two adults. Highly recommend. By the way pets are allowed. Within walking distance of the few shops and the visitors centre. Safe and secure.

This is the caravan park to stay when in Derby. Spacious, shady, close to everything and with a very pleasant manager. We came across this place by a chance after a long drive from the bush. We arrived in Derby after dark, ready to swag it on the side of the road if need be, but we were glad we found it. We were pleasantly surprised to find the manager who was still around to tell us with enthusiasm all about Derby and where to find this and that.
