“Fantastic place, Great Service and Value for Money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2014

We stayed at Duck Inn with our 2 boys (8 and 9) in August.

From the time that you walk inn, you can tell that they really have thought about how to provide great service. We were met by the ski shop staff as soon as we walked through the door. Check-in was a breeze and we went straight to our room. The room is brand new, smelled great and everything was spotless. The beds are very comfortable, the linnen clean and fresh.

We went back to the ski shop later in the evening to get fitted with skis and boots. The staff took their time getting our boots fitted right (not like other places where they just give you the boots and tell you to fit yourself) and then explained the difference between available skis.

We put the skis in ski storage area and boots in the drying room (they do have professional boot driers in t he drying room!!!!) and booked the restaurant for dinner.

The food and service were first class. I had the duck, my wife had chicken and and the kids had steak. We thoroughly enjoyed them. For desert we shared the panacotta. Awesome!!

We had a great time and would recommend the Duck Inn to families that are after great glace with excellent value for money.

Room Tip: We had a Balcony rooms. It was great for the kids as they could play outside without us having to w...

The Duck Inn is a pretty cool little place which requires a short trip into the main part of town to hit the slopes. We made some of our own slopes on the side of the hotel which was cool. Decent place, would stay there again as we don't spend long in the rooms.

My family recently stayed for two nights during the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships. In summary, we had two major problems with this accommodation: our room stank badly of mould; and they did not cater for the early starts (pre 7:30am) of the competition.

The first thing we noticed on arrival was the smell of mould that only got worse as we approached our room. There was an attempt to cover it up with incense sticks on a locker in the hallway, rather than fix the problem, which only made the smell worse. Once in the room the smell slowly became overpowering and almost unbearable. Changing rooms wasn't an option as it was fully booked. We just had to put up with it for two nights. I'm sure something could be done about it but it shouldn't smell in the first place. Terrible.

Second, the competition for the Vic Interschools starts at 7:30am, but you needed to leave before 7am to get to the competition ski runs on time. That means having breakfast before 7am. They didn't provide any kind of in-room dinning or DIY options. A number of other guests were there for the Vic Interschools and were in the same position. We asked management and staff before we arrived if they could accommodate this. We again asked on arrival, and again on the night before the competition. All we wanted was a self-serve continental breakfast (cereal and milk would have been ok) between 6:30am and 7am, even though we had prepaid for a cooked breakfast. The best they would offer after much inquiry was a continental breakfast at 7:15am which they knew was too late. They just weren't interested in helping their guests. We had to make other, rather ordinary arrangements for breakfast.

This is the busiest week for Mt Buller and any accommodation provider that cared about their guests would have figured out what was needed to make sure their guests were taken care of properly. It's not like the Duck Inn is budget accommodation. It pretends to be boutique, with an upmarket restaurant, and tariffs to match. Providing breakfast at an appropriate hour so guests could get to the competition on time is not that hard. Most of the mountain's other accommodation providers do this without fuss.

Based on our experience, it is clear to me that the Duck Inn doesn't care about their guests health or welfare.

Avoid.

Thankyou for your response.
It is disappointing that given that you had 2 potential issues, your rating does not reflect other positive elements of your stay like comfortable beds, warm rooms etc..
If the room had a mould smell which may have resulted from previous guest leaving the door open etc, it would be great if it had been mentioned at the time. This way, we could do something about it.
We clearly advise of the breakfast time being from 7.45am to 9.00am. We also open the breakfast half an hour early during inter-schools. We have found that guests that want to have breakfast outside of those hours, bring something with them.

Where do i start. We arrived late and could let ourselves in which was great! Thats where the good parts end....

Got complimentary drinks as a part of our package...except the bar didnt open Saturday afternoon/evening to use them. No staff bothered to mention it wasnt opening either -there went our dinner plans.

Overall -rude staff, stained linen , no power in the bathroom, lights hardly worked in bathroom etc. Etc.

Would not recommend them at all -lots of places in the village choose another! !!

The bar was open on Saturday afternoon till 6.30pm. You chose not to come during the open hours. Power in the bathroom is in the vanity and that is written in the Welcome Book that is in the room.

My partner and I stayed a Duck Inn during 19-21st of August 2014.

Service: We received a very friendly welcoming by Anthony upon our arrival. We arrived earlier than check-in so stored our bags in the meantime and Anthony readily fitted us out with some ski gear. Great service and so quick!! On the down-side, the only slightly negative part for me was the third day when we had checked out, we stored our bags again and went for a wonder in the Village. I had bought some instant noodles for a snack and we decided to go back to the Hotel and have these instead of buying a big lunch. The kitchen was closed at this time, so I ask someone in the ski shop/reception (not sure of the name) if we could have some hot/boiling water and the answer was no! Had we still be checked-in we could have boiled it ourselves in the room with the Kettle. We did receive a friendly good-bye when our taxi came. Some Duck Inn Stubbie Holders were given to us...not a big thing but it made a big difference to receive something nice as a reminder of our stay. I remember the lady hurriedly handing them to me as we wheeled our luggage out the door, with a big smile and a "have a safe trip".

Rooms: When we came back from skiing during the first day of arrival, Anthony showed us to our room. The room was very clean, no bad smells and the space was adequate for our length of stay (2 nights). The bathroom was a little tiny, but I'm not a big person so that was fine for me! Showers are the one thing I desire the most on trips, they must be clean, hot, great water pressure, and with some amenities (such as shampoo/body wash) and Duck Inn had all of these! It was so nice to come back after a full-on day of skiing to have this!
The bedding was comfortable and clean. We slept very well! The furniture & decor was all very new and modern. Very nice! Heating was definitely not a problem! Often we were so hot from running around in thermals and jackets that we'd come back and open the window to cool us back down. Windows that open (even without a balcony) was fantastic! Great view. I would have liked there to be face-washers/flannel in the room, but this absence wasn't a big enough deal for me to go and request one. Towel warmers in the bathroom were a nice addition. We didn't have a problem with the automatic lighting. Was a bit strange in common areas such as the hallways, but in no way an interference at all.

The hotel was generally very clean and comfortable (public/common areas), especially since you have people walking around in dirty snow boots everywhere. The dining / restaurant is quite pricey, though we didn't eat there for dinner so can't comment on the quality/quantity, none-the-less if you're not prepared to spend $$$'s then there are plenty of places to eat in the village which is only a short stroll away and makes for a nice evening out and stroll back (there's a free shuttle if you don't want to walk). Our breakfast was included and was a choice of various hot sides, or help yourself to bread/toast, condiments, cereals etc. From memory the sides included, egg (poached/scrambled etc), bacon, mushroom, pancakes, and tomato? (We visited 4 cities in 2 weeks and many breakfasts were had so these details may not be exact)... but it was definitely hot, delicious, and more than enough for a good start to the day. Tea/coffee/juices were also included, however if you wanted an espresso coffee then it was around an extra $4.

We spent two nights here with our two children for our first family holiday to the snow. A great location, a quick walk to the village centre or the bus stops right across the road. The room was clean & comfortable and the food & service was excellent.

We spent 3 nights here for my husbands 40th. Beautiful location, extremely friendly staff and owners. Food in the restaurant was great. Early bird meals at the restaurant was a bargain. Hotel is across the road from free shuttle bus stop. Walking to the village only took 15-20 mins. Hire your ski gear from here. We didn't but we will next time after observing the service and attention to detail for best fit. Rooms very clean. Breakfast was excellent short order type. Absolutely no wastage, you order what you want. Wifi only $5 for duration, cheap.
