“Cleanest, Friendliest place we've EVER stayed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2008

My wife and I live only forty minutes east of Rutherfordton, NC and frequent it on our way to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. I happened upon The Firehouse Inn by search engine and have wanted to stay there for a while now.

This B&B is the nicest, cleanest, friendliest staffed and most economical of any we've ever visited (hotels included). Going the extra mile seemed easy for the staff who were always more then accommodating. It was the cleanest, most detailed place as well (I actually began TRYING to find anything out of place or overlooked!). We stayed in room number five, which happened to be the most artistic room. The previous owner (wife) was a talented artist and painted every square inch of the room and adjoining bathroom (will add our own pics of the room).

THE BED WAS FABULOUS! Neither of us have ever slept in a more luxurious bed (Ballantyne Resort being second)!

FOOD
The Firehouse Inn had great breakfasts. We loved the egg quiche!
The town of Rutherfordton is charming and small. We've both grown up nearby and found a nice, little restaurant there called Gregory's. My first dish there, the Tuna Steak, was incredible, although several other times I found the same dish iffy. Legal Grounds offers a pub, coffeehouse and pizzeria all in the same location. They have great breads and sandwiches. Dinner entres also look good but we haven't tried them yet.
M2 (apparently said as "M Squared") is another great, little "bistro"-type restaurant in near-by Spindale (Nearby-by means on the same road, only a mile away. The two towns should honestly merge, they are so close together). The food there was incredible, the service great, but the ambiance lacked the creeping-close-to-one-hundred-dollar-range bill.
Barley's (directly beside of M2) was a great pub-type restaurant was micro-brewed beers, INCREDIBLE char-grilled chicken wings and decent calzones (WAY too many pepperonis) and live music.

Overall, Rutherfordton is a very slow-paced, quiet, small town which is exactly why we chose it for our Valentine's Getaway. We did not want to go to a destination that made us feel like we should get out of bed earlier than usual and be pressured into seeing all the sights of a tourist destination. We wanted it simple and straightforward. I'm certain you won't find a better deal then The Firehouse Inn. The price is comparable to lower-end hotels with incredible, upscale appeal and amenities.

IN A NUTSHELL
The Firehouse Inn</A></U> is well worth the price and more (DON'T INCREASE YOUR RATES!), the staff is wonderfully hospitable and COMPETENT and obviously care about the Inn and love their duties. The breakfasts were excellent and all aspects of the Inn exuded excellence and indulgence. Everything was of superior quality-EXCEPT ONE THING: Toilet paper! Scott one-ply doesn't fit in such a wonderful environment. Change that and this place is sheer perfection.

My wife and I travelled four hundred miles to spend a long weekend at this Bed and Breakfast . We arrived to find our hosts had surpassed all expectations . The Firehouse Suite is appointed with a Bose radio , cable television , raised spa / tub (rose petal bath is optional) , walk in closet , wall closets , nice stone tiled shower , vanity sink with mirror , private water closet and sink , robes , slippers , writing desk , excellent king bed , tasteful antique furnishings throughout , high ceilings , tall arched windows , more than ample lighting , and let us not forget the fireplace . A most relaxing retreat .
Proper breakfast daily , coffee and espresso available at all times , as are water , juices , sodas , etc.
Our hosts are without peer in my eyes . David and Lynn are among the finest people I have ever met . They are the most gracious innkeepers I have ever encountered with an exemplary staff to pamper you into sublime relaxation .
The inn itself is an important part of the local history and architecture . The town of Rutherfordton is more of a quaint village with interesting shops , art studios and galleries . Easy walking distance from the inn . We spent a day on walking the town and touring the shops ....... excellent . Several dining options are close by with M2 being our favorite . The chef is very creative with a fusion of styles and an excellent wine selection .
Another easy day trip is Lake Lure and Chimney Rock . I Highly recommend this 30 mile jaunt to everyone .
We already miss the inn and are planning a return visit . David and Lynn Robinson will offer suggestions , recommendations , conversation , dinner reservations , and accommodations upon request . Do not miss this hidden jewel .

My wife and I spent a night here recently in the company and at the suggestion of a close friend, and were delightfully surprised to find such lovely accommodations in perhaps a relatively unlikely place. Rutherfordton is a lovely little town close to popular destinations (Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Asheville, Biltmore etc) -- but not exactly on most people's way to anywhere. The Inn -- which formerly housed this small town's firehouse and city hall -- has been beautifully restored and luxuriously furnished with antiques and designer pieces. We stayed in room 2 or 3, can't remember for sure, but the room was spacious, incredibly high-ceilinged with huge windows, full of nice touches like swiveling / reclining armchairs, a gas fireplace, Bose stereo and so on. Closets, dressing and bath areas were similarly spacious and well-equipped. David and Lynn are gracious hosts, and as a former head of private butlers at the Cloisters, David is a hospitality professional as well as a friendly and engaging English gentleman. Our breakfast included fresh fruit, a delicious frittata (or some such thing), sausage, juice, bread and a wide selection of individually brewed coffee, expresso or teas, served in the beautifully-decorated living room. The Inn is located in the heart of downtown Rutherfordton, but it was quiet, calm and relaxing. We had a very good dinner at the M2 restaurant in Spindale, and have had great meals previously at the Water Oak in Rutherfordton. Prices seem quite reasonable for the value. We would highly recommend the Firehouse Inn as a home base for someone seeing friends, traveling on business, visiting nearby tourist attractions, or just looking for a relaxing getaway.

This B&B is located in the town of Rutherfordton, NC. My wife and I were married on July 21st of this year and stayed our honeymoon night here. We actually live in Rutherfordton, so I think it says a lot that a couple would want to spend there honeymoon night at a place that is local.
David, the Innkeeper is an English Butler and really goes out of his way to make you feel at home here, he has great stories to share. He really added to the already amazing atmosphere.
The decor in the place is beautiful. I've lived in this area all my life and actually used to go to this location for little league baseball signups when it was still the fire dept. and city hall. Boy a lot has changed.
Our room (room 4) was the smallest in the inn, but is no smaller than a typical hotel room. In fact the ceilings, in my estimate are about 15' high, so by no means do you feel closed in. Rather, you feel very comfortable as the setting is very intimate. Each room has a Bose Wave Radio as well as TV, though we never watched it. Our bathroom had a large walk-in shower and had robes and slippers for our use.
The Living Room is a large open room with several seating areas. My wife and I sat together and read some of the books provided while enjoying a snack from the pantry and a cup of coffee.
I would highly recommend this Inn to anyone who wishes to escape for a night or several. It will provide you with an intimate, yet not closed-in feeling where warmth and simplicity abound.
