My wife and I live only forty minutes east of Rutherfordton, NC and frequent it on our way to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. I happened upon The Firehouse Inn by search engine and have wanted to stay there for a while now.
This B&B is the nicest, cleanest, friendliest staffed and most economical of any we've ever visited (hotels included). Going the extra mile seemed easy for the staff who were always more then accommodating. It was the cleanest, most detailed place as well (I actually began TRYING to find anything out of place or overlooked!). We stayed in room number five, which happened to be the most artistic room. The previous owner (wife) was a talented artist and painted every square inch of the room and adjoining bathroom (will add our own pics of the room).
THE BED WAS FABULOUS! Neither of us have ever slept in a more luxurious bed (Ballantyne Resort being second)!
The Firehouse Inn had great breakfasts. We loved the egg quiche!
The town of Rutherfordton is charming and small. We've both grown up nearby and found a nice, little restaurant there called Gregory's. My first dish there, the Tuna Steak, was incredible, although several other times I found the same dish iffy. Legal Grounds offers a pub, coffeehouse and pizzeria all in the same location. They have great breads and sandwiches. Dinner entres also look good but we haven't tried them yet.
M2 (apparently said as "M Squared") is another great, little "bistro"-type restaurant in near-by Spindale (Nearby-by means on the same road, only a mile away. The two towns should honestly merge, they are so close together). The food there was incredible, the service great, but the ambiance lacked the creeping-close-to-one-hundred-dollar-range bill.
Barley's (directly beside of M2) was a great pub-type restaurant was micro-brewed beers, INCREDIBLE char-grilled chicken wings and decent calzones (WAY too many pepperonis) and live music.
Overall, Rutherfordton is a very slow-paced, quiet, small town which is exactly why we chose it for our Valentine's Getaway. We did not want to go to a destination that made us feel like we should get out of bed earlier than usual and be pressured into seeing all the sights of a tourist destination. We wanted it simple and straightforward. I'm certain you won't find a better deal then The Firehouse Inn. The price is comparable to lower-end hotels with incredible, upscale appeal and amenities.
IN A NUTSHELL
The Firehouse Inn</A></U> is well worth the price and more (DON'T INCREASE YOUR RATES!), the staff is wonderfully hospitable and COMPETENT and obviously care about the Inn and love their duties. The breakfasts were excellent and all aspects of the Inn exuded excellence and indulgence. Everything was of superior quality-EXCEPT ONE THING: Toilet paper! Scott one-ply doesn't fit in such a wonderful environment. Change that and this place is sheer perfection.
