The quality of the food here is very high standard. If you are after a massive meal, you'll need 3-4 courses and sides with your main, which will set you back a pretty penny. If you prefer to eat a moderate amount of delicious food and walk out feeling good, a small starter, main and dessert should do you well. For me, the mark of a top quality restaurant is that EVERYTHING is delicious - the seasoning is perfect, the flavours combine beautifully from the sauce/dressing, through the meat (if you're into that sort of thing!), and down to the vegetables served with it. Desserts are perfectly balanced in richness and sweetness, with a little saltiness, and just the right size. 1918 does this superbly.
The service is borderline formal, with the waitresses sounding a little robotic as they perfectly recite the specials. The food comes quickly but not too quickly. Water is refilled as needed but not intrusively. On a winter's night, the log fire adds a special atmosphere (as well as heat!), and I imagine the verandah would be just lovely on a summer evening. I love a restaurant with separate dining rooms (1918 is in a gorgeous stone cottage).
There were not many wines available by the glass, but enough. The rest of the wine list looked pretty good. I love this place. It has never disappointed.
