“expensive food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

We did not stay here but ate here whilst staying in the area, nice hotel, and the only one in Auburn, but for what you get the food is expensive, we are talking about over and above city prices for a country hotel, eg a steak was $36.50, where the steak at skillogalee restaurant was actually less, and skillogaleee is a top notch restaurant, not a pub, the service was good on the saturday night, even though they were fully booked, but it was not as attentive on the Sunday night, when they weren't fully booked, less staff on, so I would say, lovely pub, lovely people but for what you get food wise, way overpriced.

From Sarah's great smile we knew that our night would be memorable. The Rising Sun is a fabulous heritage Hotel in Auburn, Gateway to the Clare Valley. The village has a historical walking trail that points out its importance during the heyday of the 1850's. Although we stayed elsewhere I was told that the Pub also has accommodation in the original building and the stables. My partner decided to try the al la carte special of NT Barramundi and seafood which he said was of a high quality. I preferred a smaller serving so tried the Bar Meal of Rump, it was served Pub style with chips and salad. We had the house Shiraz which is grown on the families vineyard and is available for sale as a clean skin. Not a bad drop too. So $ wise you could choose your budget. The desserts were exceptional especially the Hazelnut Crumbed fruit. On a warm evening the verandah with its glass balustrade would be very enjoyable but the atmosphere inside with its heritage pressed ceilings and open fireplace would be very welcoming.
Thank you Sarah for your enthusiasm and sharing a little of the local knowledge!

Room Tip: Definitely book - we were there on a Monday night and we took the last unreserved table inside !!

Needed a value for $ place to stay for one night in the region. Did a search online and found this place!

For $70 I am getting a room, double bed ensuite + generous continental breakfast in a beautiful old hotel. If you don't need bright and flashy accommodation and like the old world charm of country pubs this place is for you!

Oh and the menu in the restaurant is great as is the wine list.

I will be back

We chose the Rising Sun primarily as a base to cycle the Riesling Trail to Clare, and because of good reviews of new local restaurant Terroir. With an accommodation deal we chose to pay a higher rate for more room in the Executive Room. The positives - the room and linen were spotlessly clean and the bed comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming. The downside - the larger room gave us a faded tapestry lounge which didn't face the TV, (perched on top of a mini fridge). The Executive Room faces the Main North Road with its steady stream of freight trucks and traffic. The 70s-style tarnished brass bathroom fittings, old bath and pine toilet need replacing. Breakfast provisions were tucked into the old wardrobe and we wondered where we would perch to eat breakfast if we hadn't been able to sit at an outdoor table facing the busy road. Auburn is a quiet and quaint town and an ideal base to explore the region.

Room Tip: Executive room faces main road and extra space adds little value. Would choose smaller regular room...

We stayed on the 23rd of February for a Day on the Green. We had a wonderful girls weekend with the five of us staying in the Muse Cottage. Sarah was very kind to let us in earlier to freshen up before the concert. The place was clean and we had two towels each. Breakfast was also included it was simple but very good (continental). Auburn is a nice country town and the hotel is great. Would defintly recommend and go again.

Stayed here for one night and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Ken and Paula run the hotel and are absolutely wonderful hosts.

Food: We ate lunch in the restaurant and it was generous, lovely and well priced. Paula later told us all produce is sourced locally.

Accommodation: The hotel is deceptively large. There are a number of options to choose from - but we just went for a basic bedroom with ensuite. Room was clean, air conditioned and had everything we needed. Happy.

Staff: Absolutely wonderful country people who genuinely enjoy what they do. Ken has over 35 years in the Clare wine industry so if you want to know anything about that he's your man!

Overall - would I visit again for a meal? Absolutely

Great experience and thanks for the hospitality Ken & Paula!
