Meriton Serviced apartments southport, stayed here for 9 nights, and the stay was a great one but there are some pluses and minuses to consider if you are thinking of staying here.
1. The room
The biggest plus is the rooms that you get. rooms were really spacious, lots of room. Rooms look just like the pictures, no surprises. got the 1bed room apartment. Actually it was even a little bigger than I was expecting. Separate bath and shower. good size washer, dryer and basin in a small laundry room (in the apartment). Full size (and a good sized) kitchen, with oven, microwave, full size dishwasher, gas burners, loads of dinnerware, and really good pots and cooking utensils. Everything in the kitchen I possibly needed. Balcony with table and chairs outside. I think you can be comfortable here for a long time. The really great rooms are alone enough reason to come back and stay here.
2. Modern apartments
Nothing was old, nice modern lobby, nice looking building.
3. Friendly Staff.
All the staff were really friendly, chatty, and quite helpful. The staff are a big plus for this place.
All rooms come with free wifi, which was great! and connection was easy. Although it did stop working once or twice, they had a couple of different wifi signals to ensure there would always been one working with signal where you are in the complex. So simply one click to switch to the next one was no drama.
5. Amenities and housekeeping
A small daily refresh of amenities (and bed and towels) plus a full cleaning twice a week was great. Good amenities including dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent, etc etc.
Although the locations served our needs for the duration of the trip. Definitely the biggest problem with this place if the location and the lack of public transport. But no problem if you are planning on coming here with a car.
These apartments are not on the beach (but we did not chose it for a beach holiday) and is about a 1.5 km walk down to main beach. So this was walkable for us on the evening and the weekend.
It is also about 1km from the nearest bus stop (which is just a bit closer than the nearest shopping centre). which is quite easily walkable if you are not over loaded with suitcases etc. The train station is a $40 taxi ride away.
If you stay here I really suggest you have a car, although once the light rail is finished this will probably be different as there is a light rail stop (almost finished) is very close to these apartments. But these apartments are not the first choice if you want to just wander a few hundred meters down to the ocean, and have views over looking the water etc.
Noise was a problem for us. Although this is a quiet area, and very peaceful at night, We were in a room the looked into the centre of the complex and unfortunately we were also situated right next the parking garage, so could hear the gates open and close every time a car came in and out. Didn't realise until we had already unpacked everything and started settling in, So we did not ask for a change of room although certainly considered it. We knew some other people who were staying across the hall from us, and being on the other side of the corridor meant no garage noise. So its not everywhere here.
Secondly the large metal bins are moved in the morning around 6 or 7 am? and we were woken up on a couple of occasions.
3. Check out
Check out time was 10am which is quite early, and when we asked about the possibility late check out we were told we could but would be charged even for an extra hour. Fair enough if they need the rooms and say no because there is no availability, but to be charged extra is a bit much, especially after staying 9 days, then to have to pay if we wanted an extra hour or so was not great.
3. The shower.
I meant to mention this to the front desk on departure -then forgot because we were hurrying. The shower door seal needs checking as a lot of water gets on the floor while the shower door is closed (room 404). This annoyance was slightly mitigated by the fact we got a new bathmat each day. I also suggest that management changes all the shower heads for ones with wider heads and better pressure.
All considered. I would probably choose somewhere else if I was only coming for a romantic beach weekend, and I would stay on the water. But if I was coming with a car, say for a week or more and also wanted to see more areas of the gold coast, I would certainly come back here (and be sure ask for a room on a different side in advance).
Although there were minuses, overall we felt it was quite good value, really nice rooms, and a very pleasant stay. And given that we knew about the location when booking (we had to be in southport for something other than the beach), and given that we did not ask to change to a less noisy room and felt we could live with it. The positive aspects of plenty of space and the really high standards of the apartments in general,the great kitchen as well as the friendly staff, earn this place an excellent from me.
