“our experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

We were only told our hotel 3 days before departure and so it was with some trepidation (after reading reviews) that we started our holiday at the H Top Royal Star. What a surprise, we found the hotel to be clean and although rather dated (not a four star) ideal for our holiday with 4 adults and 4 teenagers.
There was enough choice in the restaurant to please everybody, with lovely salads and meat and fish on every day.I read reviews stating that the food was cold but we certainly did not find that was the case.We had a trip out to Barcelona and the hotel provided us with a free packed lunch.
At night there was entertainment and the hotel was packed creating a buzzy atmosphere that we weren't expecting this early in the season.
A lovely 10 minute stroll to the beach which was clean and not too busy. We also went to Barcelona on a coach (approx 20 euro return). This service runs every 30 mins and the bus station is about 10 mins walk from the hotel.
The staff were pleasant and we did not encounter any rudeness towards us as previous reviewers have stated.
All in all we had a great time.I think some people expect far too much for the money that they paid. This was a great place to explore the Costa Brava. The only downside to the hotel is that the walls are paper thin and you could hear people in adjoining rooms and corridors. However the beds were really comfy and we all slept really well.
I would recommend this hotel,it is in a great place.Lloret has pubs and clubs, we recommend the Tyrol Bar,shops and a great beach. we were never bored.

Room Tip: Try and get the 2nd floor upwards as we noticed that the lower floors were facing a wall with no vie...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

Like many of your reviewers I was sceptical about this hotel having read the comments. We booked a last minute all inclusive deal and at the price we paid I wasn’t expecting very much. However, it far exceeded my expectations! Overall the hotel is a little dated but it was very clean and in my opinion well maintained. The location was excellent as it is in the middle of the town so either beach area (Lloret or Fenals) was easily accessible as was the bus station with connections to Barcelona for 16 Euro and Girona Airport for 9 Euro.

The rooms are cosy but very clean and comfortable. We had a couple of English Channels which was good for catching the news. The views vary - you can be at the front with pool and far reaching sea views or at the side (which we were) looking into the other rooms. Views are variable everywhere so no criticism there and it is the luck of the draw when it comes to room allocation. The food was varied, plentiful and we had no complaints. We ate out for a change one night - a grim tapas meal which cost over 60 euro. I was sorry as I had left a rather appetising FREE Paella in the hotel! A real bonus is that you can use your all inclusive card to eat in other HTOP hotels. Great if you are at Fenals Beach (Lunch at the Royal Beach) or visiting another resort. The Bars are spacious, the entertainment a bit of fun (Flameco Dancing and Singing Duets) and the service was excellent with a daily cocktail ‘Todo Inclusive’ which again cost us over 6 euro at a bar in the town. We didn’t use the pools but they looked clean and were well maintained.

I found some of the comments on other reviews about staff rudeness a bit strange and thought they were exaggerated but I would have to agree. Some staff (not all by any means) were surly and curt. That included some of the receptionists and restaurant staff. You just ignore it! The room staff and bar staff were on the other hand very friendly.

On Balance (and I think that is lacking in some of the reviews) I would find it very hard to criticise the Royal Star given what we paid. Possibly the four star rating is confusing the issue. It is not a four star on a par with Major Chain Hotels or resorts in Egypt or Turkey but probably is when compared with other hotels in the resort . Last year I paid THREE times more per night to stay in a four star chain hotel in a similar resort at a similar time of year and without the inclusive bar. If cost is important to you then this hotel provides excellent and unbeatable value for money. I paid £ 84 a person for four nights - Room, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Drinks, Cocktails, Ice Creams, Teas and Coffees and the ability to swop around hotels for lunch out. How can you criticise that!

We are planning to return later in the year with friends and will be happy to book the Royal Star or the the Royal Beach. I have also stayed at the Amaika Hotel in Calella which was faultless. All four star rated.

Room Tip: High Floor Rooms above the main bar have far reaching sea views/pool views.

We often short break in Spain - in fact we are there around 3 times every year - we visited more than 25 hotels in 30 years - many times we return back - this hotel is right at the bottom of the league table. Very Very poor indeed.
Reception staff = ok 3/5,
Restaurant staff = poor 2/5 - food ok 3/5,
Room maids = very good 4/5,
Rooms - very poor 1/5 - out dated and very dark and ugly, desperate for make over.
Bar Staff - very poor 1/5 - put it simple (very rude) why is it at many all inclusive hotels the bar staff think your not paying for the drinks (we are)
Facilities - ok 3/5
management need a kick up the backside in order to get the best from a run down operation.

Room Tip: tip for travellers - pay a few £££ more and go to another hotel (sorry to be neg)

I stayed here for 4 days and my stay was very pleasant. The staff spoke english and were very helpful always giving more then what you would ask for. Th rooms were nice and tidy with the maid cleaning the rooms everyday. The food was great there was always something that we could eat and with a variety of food served the next day. I could not fault them in any way. I would recommend them ans definatly stay there again :)

I have visited this hotel on several occasions because it has all you need. It is only 30 mins from either girona or barcelona airports. The hotel is very clean and is also cleaned and towel change daily. staff are extremely helpful. The food is good - never had a problem with it - also packed lunch if you go out all day. all rooms have tv and hair dryer and the showers are powerful. the hotel is situated in a prime position. It is a few minutes walk to the lovely beach, water world park is a stones throw away but you can get the bus outside the hotel which takes you right there - a must if you have a family. The bus station is central and you can go to barcelona for the day - the hotel also has a free bus shuttle service at peek times. If you dont want to venture out of the hotel, there are two outdoor pools and an indoor with hot-tub. I will definately be going back next year - A lovely spanish holiday once again.

Room Tip: always ask for balcony overlooking pool

My daughter and I travelled to Lloret for a short break, looked at the reviews and we were a little sceptical but I have to say we were not disappointed. Our room was very nice and cleaned everyday. The food was very good and varied. Staff were mostly very pleasant, the odd 1 or 2 were missing the humour gene but all in all we were very impressed. Didnt use the outside pools as it was November but we did use the indoor pool located in the basement and the jacuzzi. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Royal Star.

we have been to the royal star for 6 years in a row,
we love the hotel, the staff are always polite and freindly, we find the food lovely, with a variety of foods to suit everybody,
The rooms are clean and spacious, my only criticisms are that the doors slammed, and only one pillow,
If you are on a budget then you can't go wrong as the hotel supply everything needed, fanals beach is to the right of the hotel and lloret beach to the left, you have an array of shops
The hotel also supply a coach for you to try other h top hotels for the day, getting all the same service as you do in the one you are staying in,
You can also do a medieval night at the comte de valltordera, which includes a meal of a whole chicken, veg, ice cream, wine for the adults, and soft drinks for the kids, along with jousting etc, being picked up from the hotel, a brilliant night out.
We have already booked for next year, as we still have things in the area that we have not seen yet, every year i ask my children ( who are all now adults) where shall we go on holiday this year, and they all say the same thing, " THE ROYAL STAR MUM"

Room Tip: The cemetery is to the back of the hotel, so if this is a problem request the front of the hotel
