The Yucca Hotel is a very pleasant place to stay in Jiangmen. From a Chinese standard, it may rate 5 stars, but it surely lacks compared to international 5-star hotels. The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. The check-in service is efficient. My girlfriend checked us in as she speaks Cantonese. The front desk, concierge and bell boys do speak some English, though. For my purposes, the hotel is ideally situated - right across from the north gate of Wuyi University. There is a decent mall attached to the hotel, and the mall has a cinema, KTV and a Pizza Hut and KFC. There is a good supermarket in the lower level of the mall.
We booked a suite. The room was big and comfortable. The jacuzzi bath was broken, so we were transferred to another room. The second room reeked of stale smoke, so we asked for another room. They got it right on the third try. The air conditioning could be set to any temperature we liked. Our hotel in Beijing last year only cooled down to a set temperature (set by the hotel) then shut off. The hotel provided a basket of fruit each day. There was a good variety, and it all was fresh.
The main restaurant on the first floor is the Boston Western Restaurant. It serves both western and Chinese food and drinks. It is reasonably priced, and the food is okay. It is adequate, not outstanding. It offers a decent choice of both Western and Asian foods for their breakfast and lunch buffets. On weekends, the restaurant provides music. When we visited, there was a band from the Philippines. They were finishing the last song of a set when we sat down and ordered beer and some snacks. They took a break which seemed entirely too long. After forty-five minutes, the band still was not over their break. Maybe Filipino bands tire more easily or do not know so many songs, so they need to extend their breaks to fill out the night. There is a large dim sum restaurant on the third floor. We did not eat there, but it was very busy on the weekend. It seems to be very popular with the people of Jiangmen.
The hotel has premier-level floors for business people. One of the perks for the premier rooms is a free High Tea. This was a total disappointment. We went up fo afternoon tea. There was a tray of sandwiches, a small platter of fruit and vegetables and a pitcher each of water, coffee and tea. There was a housekeeping lady milling in and out. She told us to help ourselves. The room looked great - really nice decor like a traditional English tea room. Too bad the food and service did not match the setting.
I would stay here again. The price is good and the rooms spacious and comfortable. Yucca Hotel is a very good value in Jiangmen.
If you can afford to spend a little extra on your hotel, book a suite. The extra room is certainly...
