“Already booked for next year!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2011 via mobile

We lucked into open slot Memorial Day weekend because someone else cancelled. What a great experience. Beach is right there, two pools, snack bar, AWESOME and attentive staff and DQ across street. We had such a goodtime that before we left we booked our site for next year.

Just got back from our first KOA stay. We had a great time. The lodge we stayed in was perfect for us two adult couples, full bath, kitchen and a/c. It was very clean. My husband and I slept on the fouton (even though we could have slept in the bunk beds) and for the type of bed it was and for doubling as the sofa for the tv, it was actually the most comfortable fouton we've ever had to sleep on. While the KOA is geared more towards families, it was still a great place with plenty of things to do for us, who did not bring our kids and had an adult only trip. You have to be prepared to stay there and entertain yourself unless you don't mind driving 15+ miles either way to get to somewhere. The beach right there off of the site was very clean. While we were there, they offered karaoke and served a pancake breakfast at the Poolside Cafe. We plan on going back again next summer with the whole family. If you go, ask for F.D. he was extremely helpful and accommodating. This place is worth what they are asking for, even if you're thinking to yourself it's too expensive. Your kids will love it there!

Room Tip: If you require a/c, be sure to request it

KOA Hatteras, really in Rodanthe is an excellent campground for families. They have access to the beach with a brand new boardwalk. They have access to the sound side with a short walk or drive w/ picnic tables & a gazebo. The campground also has two pools one w/2slides for the children, you can enjoy the pool side cafe and sit in the shade if you like. The staff is amazing with someone on duty 24/7 for questions, late arrivals or problems that may arise. The Summer Shiners offer several activities for families and children. There is a dairy queen directly across the street, with gas, shopping and food nearby. I would recommend Rodanthe, NC and esp. the KOA there for anyone wanting to get away and enjoy the beach.

My fiancé and I took his 6 and 8 year old to the hatteras koa for memorial day and I have never been so impressed!! The staff was super friendly and the showers were spacious and clean with plenty of warm water. The kids loved the playground and the big bouncer and they even had a stage where they held events like movie night and karaoke night! It was so much fun I def recommend staying here and getting to know the staff!!

Things good about the campground: Being directly on the beach, the huge outdoor inflatable bouncer, and the pools were old but but kids enjoyed. Wireless internet available if near the camp store. Bathrooms/showers clean but the staff seemed to clean them at peak times when needed and they were totally unaccessable until they were done.

The bad things were mainly what they advertise having at this campground as far as activities were NOT available. The train ran ONCE around ONE DAY we were there, most of the time it sat behind a gate. There was no music or icy treat when on it either. There was NO sundae cart, NO movies at the outdoor cinema, NO planned activities except tye dye which we were unaware of as there was no itinerary available for the campers. The pancake breakfast was on one day and for $4 it was NOT worth it. It wasn't a "stack" it was two frozen pancakes and 2 sausage patties microwaved. With coffee or juice. The game room was not air conditioned and most machines just took your money, the air hockey machine worked but no puck. The snack bar/pizza shop was NEVER open. Mini golf pretty unkempt with broken benches there and around the play area. (The best benches were in the Kamp Canine so if you have a dog you can sit and watch them in comfort) Not sure how much it was to mini golf but better be cheap...but doubt it. Basketball court, one hoop pole broken laying on the ground the other hoop broken. Horseshoe and volleyball area unkempt and uninviting. Banana bikes pretty old and rusty most broken and there was NO two person bike as picture shown on site. So instead of getting one rental we had to get two for each child. Rental was $3 1/2 hr and $5 hr. Many of the staff were unfriendly. Spent most of the day riding around in golf carts doing who knows what but not helping the families staying here have fun. Maybe it's better in the heat of the earlier summer but we were charged full price (pretty expensive for a campground and for what they had) if they aren't going to provide what they advertise if its getting toward the end of the summer then charge off season prices!!

Here is some info about the lodge we wish we knew before going. The staff finally replied after several emails the day we were about to leave about what was actually in the lodge so they were absolutely no help. Hope this helps you!! They had no covered porch to get out of sun/elements. When they built these that should have been considered. So we did have a pop up sun cover we put up next to the lodge to help. The area in front of the lodge was very weedy/long grass. There was no stove in the kitchen so you have to cook on the grill outside. There is a small refridge like a dorm size with a tiny freezer space on top. There was plates/ 4 hard plastic cups/glass coffee mugs. Silverware, can opener, and grill flipper/tongs. There was a full sized coffee pot. They provided two rolls of toilet paper and one roll of paper towel. There was a broom/dustpan provided so you could sweep the sand out. The air conditioner was in the main room so the the room where bunk beds and queen beds were it was difficult to get cool so be sure to bring fans. (Can't complain too much though as we noticed none of the Kabins had air conditioning!!) We were the lodge furthest in the back on the right by the beach. It was not as far walk to the beach but a far walk to pool/store/play area. There was one main drawback being there, that was a huge light that was always on shining over the area so at night our campfire was not as quaint as it never felt totally dark. These lodges also did not look like many pictures of lodges you see on the KOA site. They don't look like log cabins on the outside they looked like trailers painted wood with an ugly blue trim.

Overall we made our time fun and enjoyed the beach and if we come next time at least we will be prepared to have low expectations out of the activities/services provided. May just come off season as that is what our stay felt like with the big price tag!!

This was our first visit to Outer Banks. The KOA is pretty much in the middle, so we were able to go from Corolla to Ocrakoke during our stay. Very helpful guide to our site directed our RV into the site and stayed to help offload our toad and move the dolly. Grounds were always clean. Staff answered questions about the area. One improvement would be 50 amp service in sites closest to the beach.
