“Nice hotel, good value, great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2006

We just finished a 3 day stay at this property on business. The rooms are a bit older, but we had no problems with cleanliness. Other than a toilet which ran a bit, everything in the room was fine. We were on the 14th floor and could not hear much of the construction noise from the new building behind the hotel.

The food at the Grove restaurant was very good. We enjoyed the dinner choices and ate there 2 of the 3 days and it was good both times. The bar service isn't exceptional, but the drinks were good.

Front desk could use some more helpful staff, but the concierge team was great.

Its a BUSINESS hotel, not a resort. Keep that in mind and you will be fine. The place was built in the early 80s. The lobby is all brick, and looks like an oversized "Chi-Chi's" restaurant. The rooms however, HAVE been updated. The restaurants are like any business hotel, basically an afterthought, but you are within walking distance to a lot of good restaurants. The rooms are relatively small, due to its age, but clean. There is no continental breakfast unless you are on a club floor. There is a TON of construction going on in the area. The City of Raleigh is opening up an old pedestrian mall, that this hotel fronts on. So, you can have trouble getting to the hotel at times. You can SEE it but you can't GET there. This hotel is NOT worth the published rates on Sheraton, but call the hotel or check the discounters and you can get it at a steal. I paid $50 plus fees on Priceline. Parking is $10, but after 5 and on the weekends you can safely street park for free. A number of the airlines put their flight crews up here, which should tell you three things. 1. It is safe 2. It is reasonably priced and 3. It is reasonably good quality. It is in the middle of a bunch of downtown high rises so don't expect a view. If you are staying here on business, then this is fine. If you want a resort, go elsewhere. This and a Clarion are the only downtown lodging in Raleigh...and the Clarion is MUCH worse.

All aspects of this hotel were an unpleasant experience. The staff was unfriendly and unhelpful, rooms were not clean, hallways and common areas smelled profusely of smoke, and the construction of the new building behind the Sheraton began at 4:30am.

I stayed in the hotel for two days in May, Friday and Saturday.

First, it's good value, especially if you're used to travelling in parts of the country where the same room would be 4 or 5 times more expensive. The staff is pretty nice and seem to be doing their best. The concierge was especially friendly and helpful. The public areas feel new and are nicely kept.

However...the location is isolated and depressing, even for downtown Raleigh. Clarion Hotel about 10 minute walk away is closer to nightlife and a lot of interesting, fun restaurants and hangouts. Lots of construction/rerouting of sidewalks happening. In the hotel itself, the newsstand/convenience store seems to have very limited hours on weekends, which is bizarre in a hotel like the Sheraton. The Grove Cafe breakfast buffet was not the extravaganza that the marketing posters around the hotel promise (but the staff there is nice). The Bar staff could be a lot friendlier and more professional...no excuse for 3 bartenders to ignore someone sitting at the bar who is trying to order a drink at 7:00 in the evening, during a lull in business (and after tipping well the night before, one would expect more professional and warmer service. This isn't supposed to be like snotty Atlanta or Washington, DC.)

The only major complaint I have is that the key card system is woefully inadequate. My electronic key cards, even when I kept them away from magnets/cell phone/credit cards as the front desk advised me to do, "broke" repeatedly. I had to go to the front desk 4 times in one day to "recharge" them. Even right after recharging the magnetic strip at the front desk, one or both often would not work in the elevator card reader. I don't know how these things work, but besides being frustrating and unacceptable for a hotel of this class and self-professed standards, the problems with the cards made me wonder about the security of the hotel door locks themselves. I also stayed at the lower-price Clarion, which also uses magnetic cards, and I had no problems.

Some of the front desk staff could be more professional and informed about the hotel. I checked in on a Friday and was told that as a Starwood member I'd have access to the executive Club Lounge. It was irritating to go up on Saturday and see the sign saying that the Lounge was closed on weekends (including Friday). I complained nicely to the front desk--and the clerk who on Friday told me I'd have access then explained on Saturday that sometimes the staff forgets this fact. Not a big deal, but there could definitely be more professionalism and polish.

If you have to stay in downtown Raleigh on a Sunday night, I suggest going to Clarion. The Sheraton almost doubles the price for the same room on Sunday night as the weekend rate.
