“Wonderful place a friend chose”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

A friend of ours moved to Raleigh about a year ago (we're from DC). He looked over a number of places and suggested this (he knows we're foodies and he had never been.)

It's a renovated diner with no reservations. But who cares? Get there at 5 for the 5:30 seating or 5:30 for the 6 or so seating.

We had the pimento cheese plus some salads to start (we're on a road trip through the south, so I can tell you theirs is hands down the best).

I had the duck confit pasta, my partner had the chicken breast, our friend had the soft shelled crab.

The food and service were wonderful. I would recommend this place to residents and tourists.

“Soooo good....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

Been living here in raleigh for the longest time and never came here. Was treated to dinner with some friends and the food was delicious. Very innovative cuisine comparable to the big cities. Actually i just found out the chef here just won a James Beard award-amazing!!

Poole's is superb! Yes,this place is wonderful and friendly but the food is terrific and certainly creative. Drinks and wine are very interesting also. Prepare to wait to be seated but Don't leave.

“Almost but not Quite...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

Poole's Diner is a highly regarded spot -- it's chef just won a James Beard award. But, one has to put up with a fair bit to get the really good food. First, there are no reservations. At times it can be a decent wait to be seated, although that was not the case on this visit. What we immediately noticed upon entering was how noisy it was. Loud music and hard surfaces combine to create an unpleasant noise level.

If, however, you get past all that, the food and service are really good. The menus are posted on chalk boards and change frequently. The food is locally sourced and carefully prepared. The service is both professional and friendly. There is also an interesting wine list. On the summer day on which we went, they had an impressive selection of roses ( a bit on the pricey side, however).

We were glad we went, but I'm not sure that we'll be going back very soon. Perhaps it's made for a younger audience that we.

“Great food, weird location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

The first thing you need to know about this place is that even though it's on a super busy street where traffic is flying by just a few feet away, it's still worth going. In fact, they have their own parking lot right across that busy street. If you aren't familiar with the area you will almost certainly fly right by it because somebody will be riding up your butt. Your wife will say "oh.....there it was...." and you'll utter a profane word or two and then you'll calmly take the next right turn and work your way back to that street and you will park like a pro! After all of that, the fine folks at Poole's will take care of you with good food, good beverages, and really good dessert. If you don't mind sitting at lunch counters you should opt to eat as close to the front as possible because the farther you go back into this restaurant, the louder it gets. By the time you get back near the restrooms you'll think you've stepped into a sports bar during the Final Four. Have fun!
