“Good Brunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2011

A nice, downtown retro restaurant, casual with an off-beat menu. Emphasis on seafood, but numerous other options. The food is well presented, tasty and portions are fair - not dainty and not gluttonous.

Service was quick (not rushed) and friendly.

Atmosphere is nice-casual, with funky art and live background music.

“Excellent food in an out of date setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2011

My review will follow what many other reviewers have said about this restaurant. The setting is on a quiet side street west of downtown. While we sat inside, they do have a couple of nice tables on the sidewalk that would be good if the weather is appropriate. The inside decor is very dated. Perhaps this is the look that the ownership wants to keep and that is their choice. I also understand that to update the restaurant would be costly and require an investment in capital that is hard to do in these economic times. They do have live music every night which is a plus, just make sure that you enjoy the type of music that is on tap for the evening. The dated look aside, the food was very good. We each had a basic salad that was nothing special. We also had the mixed grill which was steak, crab cake and a scallop. It was well prepared and very tasty. For dessert we enjoyed the creme brulee and a peanut butter crunch cake, both were excellent. Our server was also very good and very attentive. The cost of meals is on the expensive side. Again the food is very good, but if you desire an upscale atmosphere as a part of the dining experience then you probably should try a different place.

“Great Brunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2011

Raleigh has few good places for breakfast. So I'm glad to recommend Irregardless's weekend brunch. At first, I thought the menu was a bit pricey (everything's around $14.00). But this price includes coffee or tea, plus a basket of mini-pastries, so it's reasonable.

The menu includes a variety of options: Low Country cuisine like Shrimp and Grits; New York deli like salmon, bagel, red onions; idiosyncratic dishes like an apple and cheddar omelet. The menu emphasizes seafood and vegetarian, but it also offers hearty meat breakfasts, such as the chop house omelet, sort of a Philly steak and eggs.

The food is fresh and the portions large. The service was unfailingly polite, allowing my wife to order an omelet of her own design. And the atmosphere, with many windows and blond wood, is just right.

In addition, there was entertainment: a middle-aged white guy singing and playing a mini-acoustic guitar, mostly inventive covers of 60s and 70s songs. The music was neither loud nor intrusive but served as the proper side order to our tasty breakfasts.

All in all, quite a pleasant experience. I plan to return often.

“GOOD MUSIC/GREAT FOOD”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

I had a pleasant experience at the Irregardless Cafe on a recent trip to Raleigh. I had the NC Brook Trout. It was very good. The live jazz music was a welcome addition to my overall dinind experience. A great place to take that special someone in your life.

“My last visit for a while”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2010

I've been to this place, but not for a year or so. Either I we ordered wrong, or got a bad night. The sea scallops were good, but we got 2. REALLY, 2 scallops is a an appetizer, not a meal. The weren't particularly large. I shouldn't order meat at a place like this, but got the rib eye. I wasn't meat marbled with fat, it was fat marbled with meat. In dim light, I was hard pressed to find any lean. The service, was just ok. The waiter was attentive, but blamed a mixed up order on the kitchen, then violated my pet peeve. When the meal came, I requested another drink, and sat there waiting to eat while waiting for the drink. My wife had finished eating before my drink came. (Perhaps that's an unfair way to measure time, as she only had 2 scallops.)

I've eaten well there in the past, but there's enough good places to eat in Raleigh that I'm unlikely to give it another chance soon. The music was the highlight of the evening.
