Chuck's is definitely on the north side of average, and if there were a "Good" rating I would have gone with that. The burgers are very good, but they really better be for $9.00. The fresh cut fries were excellent, as was the garlic aeoli dipping sauce. As good as Cheerwine is, you only get a smallish bottle for $2.50, which is a little annoying, and there aren't free re-fills on anything as far as I could tell. I am absolutely not one to complain about service, but I have to say that it was pretty slow for a burger joint. It seems like they are always busy, and they could use at least 1 if not 2 more waiters/waitresses.
Finally, our waiter was an interesting guy, nice enough but not particularly friendly. Because I'd just gone to the ATM, all I had in my wallet to pay for our $27 meal was a $100. He returned my change, said "here's your $73" and handed over a small stack of $20's and $1's. There were $10 missing, and after making sure I wasn't adding incorrectly, I hesitantly called him back and pointed out that I thought we were $10 short. He quickly agreed with me and pulled a ten from his fanny pack thing and we proceeded on our merry way.
I give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he made a simple mistake, but I got a bit of a weird vibe from the whole situation. I decided to post the story just in case this was a recurring theme. All-in-all, I'd recommend a visit to Chuck's if you're in downtown Raleigh and you are hungry.
