“a truly memorable foodie experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

six of us ventured to this restaurant in a strip mall in raleigh based on reviews and the local buzz this this gem had generated.
a smallish very dapper and tidy place with great service. on a sunday, the last seating was 7 pm ( they close early ) and we just made it.
started with the Pisco Sour ( the eruvian national drink ) at $10 a pop , it is pricey but well worth the experience. packs a slow kick --so one each was enough for us to set the tone for dinner.
appetizers were the cerviche --of course ( another classic peruvian dish ) and tamalito verde. both contrasting in texture and flavour and very well presented.
my main course ( as with several others of our group ) was the picante de camarones -a spicy shrimp concoction with a peruvian pepper sauce. a wonderful flavourful slow burn that was the clear winner at the table. never had anything like this before!! okay! spicy and peppery --and yet the sauce had complex layers of flavour that were a delight. ---and did i mention that the shrimp was cooked to perfection??
the Jalea ( shared by two at the recommendation of our server ) was lightly battered seafood served over an elaborate salsa ( a little dry --would get a side order of one of their sauces to compliment this dish)
lastly, we had the Lomo Saltado --a filet mignon preparation served in a bell pepper, onion sauce with rice and yucca fries.
we were having so much fun that we found ourselves to be the only patrons at around 9 pm. no one hurried us out --in fact we had the pleasure of meeting the chef/owners of the restaurant . Gloria is a delighful lady who regaled us with stories of how she saved her mother and grandmothers recipes from peru and then translated them as items on the menu. a humble suggestion is for the restaurant to offer a coupla vegetarian items on the menu. we had to cancel a previous evening's reservation as one person in our party was vegetarian and there was not much on the menu for her. even a simple impromptu mix of veggies with the incredible flavours would be quite an asset to the menu.
in conclusion --this has been one of the best foodie meals i have had in a long time and will surely return to sample more items on the menu.
the helpings are huge and the prices are quite reasonable. this place is a wonderful addition to the local culinary scene.

“Excellent food, unusual menu, top notch service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014 via mobile

The other Trip Advisor reviews were right - this is a superb restaurant. Don't let the location in a strip mall fool you. This should be considered at least a four star restaurant. Definitely an adventure in eating.
We were not ready to try the ceviche (fish "cook" in vinegar), but we did try the beef and beans stew with cilantro and rice as a side dish. We also had an appetizer with potatoes and crab that is not on the regular menu. We also tried the passion fruit juice which was very good. The chef makes sure the presentation is top notch as well as having great taste.
The prices are very reasonable for a top notch ethnic menu. Service was excellent. We were served by a very knowledgeable waiter and the chef himself.
We followed the advice of some reviewers and made reservations for a Sunday dinner. Did not really need it for a 6 pm dinner, but I can tell that on other nights it is probably needed.
We will be back and will be bringing friends.

“A Taste of Peru”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

My husband and I decided to try Machu Picchu while in Raleigh. We had the Jalea for two. It was delivered to our table by the chef and two others with bell ringing and cheering! It was a festive way to receive a meal. This dish is wonderful! It is lightly fried seafood that is piled on top of fried yuca, a little like french fries, and a bed of lettuce. The whole thing is topped with a delicious freshly made salsa. This is the way seafood is meant to taste. We topped the meal off with a Chica Morada, a bluish clove seasoned drink. We enjoyed it so much that we go back to Machu Picchu each time we visit Raleigh.
