One of our friends from Peru accompanied us to Machu Picchu Peruvian Cuisine in Raleigh NC tonight. I sampled 4 different dishes, all were excellent. We tried a Tacu Tacu Pork dish, a Tacu Tacu Seco dish, a Tacu Tacu Seafood dish, and a seafood dish called Tiradito. All ranged from quite good to excellent, all were well prepared and tastefully presented. As for the cuisine, I have nothing but praise!
The atmosphere is a little sparse, with only a couple of typical Peruvian crafts and photos on display. But we came for the food, not the decorations, so this was really of no consequence. Everything was attractive, nicely maintained, and this is meant more as a descriptive information as opposed to a criticism.
But . . . the help, their desire to accommodate our party of four, and several interactions with the staff left something to be desired. The restaurant is fairly small and probably only seats about 50 - 60. Yet, despite the fact that there were less than a dozen patrons present on this particular Sunday evening; our desire to be seated on one of the few 'softer' seating areas seemed to be a problem. The fussy host was not happy that our party of 4 was asking to occupy a table intended for 6. Keep in mind the restaurant was at about 20% occupancy. Our persistence won out after a frustrating exchange during which we explained that the more plush seating was needed for one of our party that had a medical issue.
The second conflict arose when someone in our group with a nut allergy asked if an entree could be prepared without the walnuts listed on the menu. We were informed that the chef "will not make any changes to recipes, she prepares the food in the way she considers proper". So be it, but people do have food allergies!
The third of our four conflicts came up when we were brought a small container of holding about one ounce of a delicious hot sauce. When we asked for a second (keep in mind we were allotted about 1/4 ounce each) we were informed "the chef will not allow more than one condiment dish to be brought to the table until this first is emptied" . . . OK, so much for my desire to ask a second time!
Finally, at the end of a delicious but slightly frustrating meal, when we asked to have the check divided (one couple, and two singles) the waiter was less than pleased that we were not satisfied to have the bill divided equally into 4 portions. I guess my two single dining friends should have gladly helped pay for my wife and my much more expensive meals?
So to sum it up, the food was great, but the staff and their desire to accommodate what should have been very simple and reasonable requests definitely left something to be desired. Actually, it left enough to be desired that I would seriously question a return visit or to making too strong a recommendation.
