Owner description: This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president. The state historic site commemorates significant events in the Polk administration: the Mexican-American War, settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California. Reconstructions of typical homestead buildings—a log house, separate kitchen, and barn—are authentically furnished. The visitor center features a film on Polk's life and exhibits on his family and tumultuous presidency.

“Welcoming, intimate site for learning about a strong President”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

Pleasant, small museum featuring a President not prominent in popular memory but strong in efficiency and ethics. Walkable grounds include interesting small cemetery. Quiet site with welcoming, attentive staff/volunteers. Tourist literature available for several North Carolina states, including free copies of _Our State_ magazine. Small gift selection available for purchase. Near Billy Graham Library.

“A Must for History Lovers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

I very much enjoyed my time at the James K. Polk hisoric site. The replica houses are very well done, and the museum had many interesting artifacts relating to James K. Polk as well as time period pieces. My guide was very knowledgeable. If you love history, go to this place!

“President Polk is not forgotten here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

Polk, our 11th President, is normally little more than a footnote in history texts. At the site of the farm where he was born a small, but excellent visitors' center provides some insights into his life and times. It does not glorify him, but presents an unbiased discussion of his short presidency. It includes a well-done short video and nice displays describing his formative years, his presidential campaign and his four years in office.
A reconstruction of his childhood farm home is on the property. A friendly docent gave us an excellent tour of the house and kitchen.

“No 4th July party for us!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

Visited on 4th July to escape the searing Charlotte heat, unfortunately there was no one at home, still, managed to get some photos but struggle to understand why every thing around Charlotte closes on Bank holidays?

Dear j0hnhill,

Thank you for your response. Our historic site is managed by the State of North Carolina. Being a state entity, we are required to observe legal holidays which means a well deserved holiday for our staff to be with their families. I hope that you were able to pick up a brochure, read the way side markers and get a feel for the humble beginnings of our 11th President.

I can not speak for the other attractions in and around Charlotte.

If your visit should ever bring you back to Charlotte, please stop by again and our staff will be glad to show you about. Happy Travels!

“American Heritage”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012 via mobile

The James K Polk house in NC is definitely worth a visit if you're in the Charlotte area. For fans of American history, the Polk house offers a great re-creation of early 19th century America. The staff is excellent, and they are eager to answer questions.

If you have an interest in 19th century American history, politics or culture - take the time to visit. They is something for both children and adults.
