My daughter and I wanted to go see the Brown Mountain lights, and didn't want anything fancy or expensive. So I booked 2 nights at Huskins Court and Cottages. Reviews at Tripadvisor were good, and the price was only $45 per night with taxes, so we booked it. Note, leave your credit card at home, because they only take cash or checks. The hotel is on a hill in front of a Christmas tree farm, and is basically a row of rooms and cottages with the house in front of it. The house is very run down, but when Mr. Huskins comes to the door, he is very friendly and helpful. After you pay and go to your room, you will find pine paneling and home made quilts in each room. The accomodations are VERY basic, but also very clean. It is kind of like staying in a friend's basement. The rooms have heat, but no AC. There is a TV with cable, and there was a small refrigerator in our room. There are also decent restaurants in the area. Try "The Italian Resaurant" and "Louise's Rock House Restaurant" on US 221 toward Marion. The strawberry rubarb pie at Louise's (heated with vanilla ice cream) is especially good. The drive to Blowing Rock is very nice, and the stop at Grandfather Mountain (though over-priced) was a hit with my daughter. Linville Caverns and Linville falls are also very close. Be sure to go to the falls-- the short walk is worth it. The point is, there is plenty to do and some nice places to eat in the area. But if you are a khaki and topsiders type that wants a spa and golf course, Huskins is NOT the place for you. If you want decent, clean accomodations that aren't fancy, Huskins is just fine. The Pineola Inn and the Pineola Motel looked a little nicer, but I would bet that they are priced accordingly. Good luck, and enjoy your trip to Pineola!
