My wife and I stayed at Pinehurst Resort in the Carolina Hotel for 4 nights just before Christmas. It was a little cool that week (50's) and we wish we had gone the week before because the highs were the 80's. Oh well, we still had a great time and 50 is pretty warm for a couple of Canucks.

The service was fantastic from the second we pulled up in front of the hotel. We were treated like royalty and rarely had to lift a finger for 4 days. The way we all want to be treated when on vacation.

When walking to your room after you arrive you will hear the 1895 floors creaking below your feet. It makes you start to wonder what the room will be like. Surprise ! The rooms are beautiful, spacious and modern. There is even a man size flat panel TV on the wall.

Pinehurst is a golfer's paradise. The resort has 8 courses and there are several other beautiful golf courses in the area. For example, Pine Needles is nearby (site of the 2007 Women's US Open). There is golf memorabila plastered on the hotel hallway walls and everywhere else you go. It doesn't take long to figure out that every great golfer that has ever lived has played at Pinehurst. You feel like you are walking on hallowed ground.

My wife and I played No.2 on our last day with a caddie and it was an experience of a lifetime. The course is not the monster I thought it would be. Of course, I played from the blue tees and not the 7330yd US Open tees that always seemed to be about 50 yards behind me. Simply put, No 2 is a fair test of golf from whatever tee blocks fit your game. I think that is what makes it a great golf course.

If you are golfing couple looking for a great golf vacation, I think you will find it at Pinehurst where golf is a way of life.

We stayed at the Manor Inn over the weekend of July7-8. This was a birthday/graduation present for my son who loves golf. The Manor Inn was very old but charming. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. Due to the age of the building the floors were very uneven so that the TV was actually at an angle. The air conditioning was the old window type unit. It was loud at night and I felt it was hard to regulate the temperature in the room (It was very hot that weekend but our room was almost too cold). The staff of the Manor Inn was very friendly, especially Kathy at the front desk. Breakfast was included with our golf package. We ate at the Carolina for their breakfast buffet which was very good. I don't golf but my husband and son really enjoyed it (thank goodness as it was very expensive). They played the number 2, 7, 8 courses. We had a nice visit. It was maybe a little overpriced with a lot of strange service charges on our bill at the end. We probably won't go back, not because we didn't enjoy it, but at over $2300.00 for a weekend it is a little too expensive.

    • Liked — Friendliness of staff, history of resort
    • Disliked — Somewhat overpriced when the golf was factored in

Great service with a smile and southern charm. Everything a golfer could need. The spa was superb and was very relaxing after a round of golf. The newly renovated Carolina rooms are top notch.

Stayed at the Carolina and attended the Pinehurst Golf Acadamy. The entire weekend far exceed all expectations. The school was able to work for both my wife (beginner) and myself (6 handicap). The teaching staff were all very knowlegable, and able to translate and impart that knowledge in way that most students could use and remember. Paul McRae was one of the best golf instructors I have ever been around.

Just returned from a company-sponsored business conference at the Carolina Hotel at Pinehurst. Overall, it was nice. Not what I would look for if it was just for me but then I'm not a golfer and I don't usually frequent expensive hotels. Staff was helpful and polite. They seemed to do a good job with organizing the event. The food at our evening dinners was top notch.

Here are a few observations:

1. Some reviewers commented on noisy floors. Confirmed. The floors are old, they make noise when people walk by. The door in my room had a pretty big gap between the door and the floor. That let extra noise in. Easily solved by rolling up the extra blanket and putting it at foot of door for the evening.

2. I tried to rest one afternoon in my room. Maids were very noisy in the hall, talking loudly.

3. No coffee maker in room. No free coffee in lobby either. Luckily, I had my hot pot and made my own! I noticed a small shop just off the lobby which will sell you coffee for $2.50 (I think that was the price).

4. Room came with standard fridge packed with expensive goodies. I didn't even break the seal.

5. Bed was fantastic. Had a pillow top but not too soft. The mattress was firm but the top cushioned just right.

6. Bathroom had a shower with one of those large shower heads with dozens of water holes. Interesting to use but no better than a regular shower head. There was no bathtub. Came with standard soaps, shampoo, conditioner, shower cap.

7. Room had a network whip to connect to a PC. However, they charge $9.95 per day for access. I heard some complaints from co-workers that they had trouble getting through to the company VPN. No confirmation on that so it's just a rumor... however, be careful if you will need to connect while there.

8. Local phone calls were free for the first 30 minutes. 15 cents per minute after that. Also, there is a $1.00 charge to make a call using a calling card. Verizon cell phone worked fine.

9. Flat screen TV in the room. Takes up less room on the dresser than a regular TV otherwise nothing special. Standard channels, CNN and FOX news, ESPNs, Discovery, History, TLC.

10. Room included hair dryer (it's in the closet), iron and ironing board.

11. Plenty of free parking on either side of the driveway to the front of the hotel. Just pull right in -- no access card or parking permit required.
