“Spectacular views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2010

We have stayed at the Bella Vista a number of times and think it has the best views on the island. The views look down across olive groves towards the ancient town of Kastro and the sea below The rooms are built in traditional Greek style and we found the beds comfortable. There's a good size swimming pool and most rooms have a terrace if to sit and enjoy the view. Breakfast was good with a selection of local produce including cereals, yoghurt, cheese, olives and locally made breads and biscuits (from the wonderful bakery in Artemonas).
I would recommend hiring a car to get around the island to the wonderful beaches, although if you prefer to walk there are good walking paths or the bus station in Artemonas is only ten minutes away. The owners, Georgos and Margarita both speak English and were very helpful.

The hotel is standing on the top of a hill overlooking the most picturesque village of Kastro and the Aegean. In the afternoon you could see from there also 5-6 other islands. The rooms were spacius but the bathroom small. The breakfast was a bit poor but had all the necessary, except eggs, There was somebody in the bar all day long in case we needed coffee, drink or something to eat(though we only had a couple of omelets).Walking to Artemon was about 5-10 minutes. Over there, there were some restaurants with home flavors local cuisine, To Artemon square there was transportation to all places of the island and the Apolonia was about 15 minutes walk from the hotel. The hotel has a big parking area. We had a good time there!

The location is remote, too far away from the center. The rooms are very basic, and the bathroom was quite frankly disgusting - I wore my flip flops in the shower. One of the beds in our room was broken, the middle of the mattress had caved in. Breakfast consisted of rotting fruit, stale bread, some slices of cheese and store-bought cookies. There was no service whatsoever in this place.

The ONLY good thing about this sad excuse of a hotel is their pool. But why swim in the pool when there are so many beaches in Sifnos?

Avoid at all costs.

This place was a massive disappointment. Avoid it like the plague.

It is absolutely filthy. I would sack the cleaner if they worked for me.

Beds were like sleeping on concrete and there was no secure storage in your room like you get in the rest of Greece (e.g. a safe for valuables).

We had to figure out who the owner was when we arrived – reception is not marked and there was nobody at the bar/restaurant. There was a lack of directions provided by the owners to even get to the place (nor was there an offer to pick us up – like you get in most other places in Greece).

Service is appalling – not only are the owners never around, but there is nobody that will actually help you. This is to be distinguished from laid back - non existent is more appropriate in this case. The one woman who appeared to work there was unwilling to help and pulled faces when asked to top up items in the breakfast buffet, such as bread!! The one time (at the start of our stay) that we did find one of the owners and ask for directions, she just waved in a general direction and gave no decent directions. Make sure you have a map so that you can help yourself. I had to help myself to wine glasses at the bar so that we could drink a bottle that we brought with us, because there was nobody around to help me – this was at sunset!! There is apparently a “restaurant” there. It wasn’t mentioned to us on arrival, there are no menus anywhere and frankly, I don’t think anyone there could be bothered cooking for their guests anyway.

Manky, scabby, constantly breeding cats roam around the place at will, including during breakfast where they beg for food. They are disgusting and add to the vibe of this dive.

The only decent feature is the pool, which admittedly is in a spectacular location looking down towards the gorgeous Kastro.

Sifnos is a great little island, however Artemonas itself is a bit of a backwater and only has a couple of restaurants that are both pretty disappointing compared to other places in Greece. Windmill Bella Vista is a short stroll outside of Artemonas. If I had my time again, I would stay in Appollonia, which had a lot more atmosphere later in the day.

We read the mixed reviews on Tripadvisor and other sites, but decided to give them a chance. We shouldn’t have bothered.

Dear Tripadvisor readers,
We were really shocked and sad after reading this review. All our beds, double or single are built -in the traditional Sifnian way(not wooden, not iron),so there is no way to have a broken bed .I always welcome the guests upon arrival and suggest them which beaches ,museums, restaurants to visit on a map given to them, sometimes give them a lift to the centre to do some first shopping from the local vegetable market! We do not offer a transfer van from the port but we can arrange for a car rental ot a taxi.As far as the breakfast buffet it is really rich with fresh fruit, fresh eggs from our chickens, fresh homemade cheese, ham, yogurt, fresh bread ,croissants, cakes from the local bakery .Maybe the staff delayed 5 minutes to restall the buffet with bread.I think this is understandable. Our snack bar is open from 20 of June-15 of September ,maybe these guests visited us before the 20th of June.We are animal lovers,we have 3 horses,2 tortoises,2 parrots,8 cats with their babies,1 dog and most of our guests love and feed them occasionally. It is good that our spectacular view to the Aegean and our pool were recognised as a plus.
Thank you for your time.
The Windmill Bella Vista manager.

We chose the Windmill Bella Vista because a couple other hotels we were considering were full. The three main towns on Sifnos are connected and have a sprawling layout, encompassing a series of hills. The Windmill Bella Vista is definitively outside of town, but only a very short walk from the (last) bus stop. Take some directions, because the signs aren't very clear, and we felt like we were lost walking from the bus stop, past farm animals and a cemetery (but a nice walk!). A short walk back to the bus stop brings you to Artemonas, where beautiful paths will take you anywhere in Artemonas, Ano Petali, or Appolonia (or take the bus). We also walked to the Castro via footpaths (unmarked, but if you just head in the general direction, you'll make it), which was a nice walk.

As an out-of-town retreat, the hotel is great. It is windward, so we had some stiff wind part of our stay (September). The pool was cold, but the view from the pool was gorgeous. Our room was open and large, newly constructed, more modern than Cycladic in architecture as our other hotels, and had the largest bathroom we had anywhere in Greece. We also had a few tv channels in english, which, while unnecessary, was great to kick back and enjoy a movie one of the nights. After a week without television, it's nice to enjoy a movie.

Service at the hotel was up and down: upon arriving, it was unclear who ran the hotel or where the reception was. We were given keys, but remained unsure of owners' roles. We arranged for a horseback ride, and were courteously told the ride would occur that evening around six. As six approached, George was not around and the rest of the staff were nonchalant, offering no solution and no apologies. We waited for about an hour, then went to dinner. We didn't hear anything until checkout, when George apologized and explained that he had gotten stuck in discussions when voting that day. The cause for his absence was reasonable, but simply an attitude of apology from the rest of the staff would have been appreciated.

We stayed at this apartment/hotel in late May 2008.
It is situated about 4 kms from the port in the mountain area about a 10 minute walk to the small town of Artemonas and its small square with 3 restaurants and about 20 minutes from the capital of Apollonia.
This is typically run Greek establishment, very laid back, if you want service the you have to seek it as the owners have a very casual way of running the complex (this did not bother us).
The room we had was a reasonable size with a balcony overlookng the pool and the sea, hills and 12th century village of Kastro which is a must to visit.
The views were spectacular, the pool a good size and these alone made our stay enjoyable.
Hire a car for a day or so as there are some beautiful areas to visit, there are 5 main roads to different parts of the Island and all of them are worth taking for some great views and small town on the way or at the end of the roads.
All in all we enjoyed our stay at the Windmill Bella Vista, our only comlaint was with the shower curtain rail that kept falling down.
Maybe it will be fixed in the time for our next stay.
