“enjoyable holiday in sifnos with antonis from smaragdi hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2012

antonis made our stay not only pleasent, but with his personal attention- we felt at home.

his hotel is situated in the central part of the island, making it convenience to see the different parts of sifnos.

we will gladly come back to sifnos and no doubt- come back to smaragdi hotel!

Room Tip: go to the rooms in the second floor facing the center of the town

We stayed at the Smaragdi Hotel for 4 nights last week and I’m so glad we chose it.We got off the bus from Kamares (the port) which leaves you right at the village square in Atemonas, and the Smaragdi Hotel is in the village Square. The room we got was lovely, bright and airy with a balcony looking out on the square and the villages beyond. Atemonas is particularly lovely in the evening as the sun sets and all the kids are out playing, neighbours are chatting, and it really is a taste of Greek village life. The bathroom was stocked with great yves rocher toiletries, and plenty of fresh towels were provided every day and our room was made up when we returned exhausted from another day in the heat. The breakfast at Smaragdi was lovely and really laid back, it is served outside on the shady terrace, and you can get delicious Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit, bread rolls and fresh capuccinos or a pot of coffee. We also had freshly squeezed orange juice every morning, I can’t emphasise how relaxed the atmosphere is at this hotel, its one of those places that makes it look like running a hotel is easy! The main village Appollonia is within walking distance along the marble paths, through the village of Pano Petali, also don’t forget to climb up through the streets of Artemonas to the top of the village to see the lighthouses, theres a fantastic view out over the sea. The people in the villages are friendly and after a few days you start to recognise the locals.I would love to return to Sifnos and if I do I would stay in Smaragdi Hotel again, it has everything you could want from a hotel and was great value too !

Smaragdi hotel is conveniently located in the main square of Artemonas in Sifnos. The lounge and breakfast area appear to be recently renovated and are nicely made. The owners seem to have invested in making the outdoor area fresh and quite welcoming. However, this care and attention to detail is unfortunately not applied to the rooms which are extremely small, with old and low-budget furnishings, tiny bathrooms with old-school fittings and unfortunately not very clean.

We wish the owners decide to extend the renovation to the interior and make their 'gem' shine throughout (smaragdi is emerald in greek).

Stayed for just over a week. And what a week it was. Artemonas was by far the most picturesque village on the island and it was an amazing experience walking down (or up!) its tiny winding alleys.

We do not drive and had to rely on the bus services - I wish bus services where we normally leave were as punctual and frequent! Smaragdi is located literally 2 minutes away from the "central" bus station of the island with easy access to all key locations/beaches. Despite such vicinity, there was no problem with noise or traffic.

The room was spacious, very clean, equipped with Korres cosmetics (very good quality Greek stuff!), A/C, TV, safebox and individual balcony. Access to the Internet (WiFi) was available through the municipal network (how cool is that?!).

Breakfast was plentiful. Amazing fresh bread from the local bakery every morning, teas, coffees, cheese, ham, pain aux chocolate and finger-licking Greek yogurt with fresh fruits, jams, honey, butter, omelettes (on request), you name it. But the best of all was the owner, Mr Antonis. We were lucky enough to be there in the low season and early morning breakfasts were not too busy. Mr Antonis had ample time to sit with us, give us advice on which beaches to visit, which tavernas to eat in and anything else we might need. If nothing else, go to Smaragdi for this man.

Sifnos is a very beautiful island. Perhaps it does not have the best beaches among Cycladic islands but offers a great combination of attractions. As noted above, it has a very well organised road network and bus service, a very well organised footpath network (apparently very popular with European tourists seeking to experience nature and even walk from one beach to another), it is small enough to get around but not tiny like other Greek islands, it has exceptional food and is also reasonably close to Piraeus so the boat trip from the mainland takes only 3 hours (with the speed boat). People are super friendly and walking in the alleys (very nice walk between Artemonas and the capital Apollonia!) allowed us to meet many of those (a very nice man welcomed us in his traditional coffee shop and allowed us to take pictures of all the funky things hanging on the walls!). We did visit during the low season but it was clear that it is not a place for wild partying - there are better islands for such a purpose in the Aegean sea.

Go to Sifnos and choose Smaragdi. You will not regret it. And while you are there, do visit the Petzoulas cafe hidden in the alleys of Artemonas for some Greek loukoumades or other traditional sweets and desserts.

We stayed at Smaragdi Hotel in August after having spent 10 days in Serifos. The hotel is situated in a quite part of the island with easy access to all the amenities and clubs the island could offer. Compared to the hotels in Serifos, the Smaragdi Hotel was unbelievably good. The rooms were cozy and cleaned every day. The balcony had an amazing view on the town. The owner, Apostolis, was very helpful and made our stay very pleasant. The best part of our stay was, no doubt, the breakfast....until 13pm! Everything was super fresh, the waitresses polite, and you could order fresh orange juice and eggs with no extra charge! We will definitely come back, maybe during the Easter break.

We arrived at Artemonas at about 11:30 and less than an hour later we were in our small but cozy room with a nice balcony with bamboo armchairs!!!
The room was cleaned daily, sheets & towels every second day and the bath products were “Korres”.
This hotel had something that is rare to find in hotels: Breakfast until 13:00! With satisfactory variety of goods, (besides the traditional coffee, tea, hot / cold chocolate, 2-3 kinds of breads, ham or turkey, cheese, butter, honey, marmalade, orange juice, croissant), you could have flesh orange juice, omelets and fresh fruit salad with yogurt, with no extra charge.
The best of all was Antonis, the owner of the hotel. Always helpful with a smile in his face, ready to answer to your questions or give guidelines and information of where to go, what to see, where to have a drink or eat.
We had a pleasant stay.
