“Quaint, clean, and friendly atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2010

A bit nervous after reading some negative reviews, but stayed three nights and had a fantastic time. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful and the entire hotel was very clean. The bed was very comfortable and it was a quiet atmosphere. If you're looking for a posh, modern hotel with up-to-date amenities, don't bother going to Ocracoke. The hotel was built in the 1930's and has just the character to match the laid-back island.

My boyfriend is an Afghanistan veteran who is about to go back into active military service and a second tour. We got word that the orders were coming, and decided to use the rest of his PTO from his civilian job to take a short vacation. We have never been to the Outer Banks, but heard that it is lovely. With the short notice and our little dog, we couldn't find a rental house, so we searched for hotels. I found Blackbeard's Inn, so we gave them a call at about 8 on a Tuesday to ask if they had available rooms for Weds-Fri nights. They had availability, and offered to "hold" a room while we planned our trip. Mistake #1: we gave our card # to the desk. When we found out Ocracoke was a 9 hour trip from D.C., we realized it was too far for such a short break and had to plan a different trip. We called them back at about 8:45 and they told us that we had made reservations and there was a fee for canceling them with such "short notice." We argued with them for a little while, because offering to "hold" a room while we plan our trip does not seem to be the same thing as making a reservation. Finally the guy said he would cancel the charge, only after we threatened to call the credit card company to challenge the charge. Mistake #2: we didn't call the CC company while the charge was still pending. Needless to say, they did NOT cancel the charge. After the $260 charge went through they offered to reduce it to about $150, the cost of one night's stay. We're very upset that they took all this money from us for reservations we never made, and then lied so that we wouldn't complain to the CC company until it was too late. AVOID this hotel, I've read through the other reviews and an awful lot of them talk about problems of being overcharged, etc. This is not hospitality, this is fraud.

Friendly, clean and a great price to boot... met lots of great people on the porch. A real taste of Island living on the edge of all the things to do in Ocracoke. You won't be sorry if you bring or rent bikes as the weather heats up.. Plan on being there again for Ocrafolk 2011...

We have stayed at Black Beard's Lodge in the past and each time it gets better. In reading other reviews, it seems others who have negative experiences don't take into account the nostalgia and history of Black Beard's Lodge. Back in early 1900’s and at the beginning of most quaint hotels, phones were not prevalent and size of the room is the matter of a person’s preference. Reviews are correct there are no phone sin the rooms, but don’t we have cell phones these days and how hard is it to go visit the front desk if you need something? Being it was one of the early hotels, if not the first on the island, it was built in a different time with different intent. The Inn Keepers have done a spectacular job in preserving the charm and history of Black Beard’s Lodge. The character preserved within this great lodge also means that some things are dated, but it is with purpose. Our choice of a room was made with the intent of our stay and what we wanted. Although our budget influenced our decision to a small degree, we focused on the experience. As this Memorial Day weekend presented, we routinely have great experiences and it is what we make of it and take into consideration that sometime “stuff happens”. The owners provide personal attention with the goal to help each and every family have a great experience. We also recognize that in some cases, people sometimes make wrong choices in which they must be held accountable. Typically, when people are held accountable is when they decide to write reviews that depict a situation as unrealistic rather than truthful. We say to those people shame on you! Yes there are other places to stay on Ocracoke Island, but none have the affordability, charm and character that we have come to appreciate. We suggest stay at Black Beard’s Lodge with an open mind and appreciation for time taken to preserve what was for our enjoyment today and in the future. Our hat’s are tipped to great owners who take time to care and a staff that echoes their standards.

We had planned on staying a week in Ocracoke, however the room was so small and cramped that we only stayed 3 days. I tripped and fell the first night going up the steps to the poarch because of a loose board, then our room was on the top level. We were ther because of our dogs. Believe me our dogs could not damage that room. There were signs all over about being charged for anything missing, as if there was anything worth stealing. I have thrown away towels that were in better condition than the ones in our room. There was a hole in the wall that we had to stuff a towel in because no one would fix it(I did ask).

The hotel was not clean and the plumbing was in disrepair. The first room they assigned us had a clogged tub. When we asked to move, they complied but acted as though it was an inconvenience. The second room was tiny, had a clogged sink and no heat. The owner brought in a portable heater. At this point, we decided one night was all we could take at this particular motel, although we were planning to stay on Ocracoke for at least four nights. It was late when we got there and after checking in, my husband went down to the lobby to look at travel brochures. While he was down there, a somewhat distressed couple came in looking for a room for the night. The owner told them it was too late and they would have to look elsewhere, which is not any easy task, off-season, at 11pm. I found this to be very rude and certainly not the attitude a person would expect from someone in the lodging business. Although the pictures on their website do make the place look quaint and charming, I did not find it to be so. Word of warning...don't be deceived by the pictures and descriptions on the web site.

Hotel was ok if you don’t mind a sink in your room instead of the bathroom, no phone, flaky wi fi (none in rooms,) flashes of hot to cold water back and forth while taking a shower, !MICRO! fridge, and NO room service (grab towles, soap, etc when you can!) Additionally, We were charged a substantial amount the day after check out for supposed torn linens???? The family was waiting outside of the room after inspection (YES be ready for the host & maid (maybe the only time you see her!) to conduct room inspection PROMPLTY after 11 check out!!!!!!!! AND DO NOT BE LATE TO TURN IN YOUR KEYS!) where NO word of torn sheet\comforter was conveyed??? They won’t call to notify or discuss either, so be sure to check your account when you get home as they are QUICK to charge with no apologies!!! If you do book here make sure it's on a credit card with limited funds or take my advice and don’t book at all..GOING SOMEWHERE ELSE is the best advice I can give!!!! Know why they call it Blackbeards (Pirates) Lodge Now!!!!
