“Our Home Away From Home”

My wife and I have been staying at Captains Landing for about 10 years. We love the arrangement - comfortable apartments with all the amenities you could ask for. Much nicer than hotel rooms. And they are kept spotlessly clean. The views of Silver Lake make my blood pressure drop significantly - charming, peaceful and, with a good sunset, spectacular! George and Betty run a first class establishment. This trip has been slightly marred by the current dredging in Silver Lake. I'm sure it won't last too much longer, but I'd check before coming.

Room Tip: We always prefer the second floor rooms - less noise and better view. The penthouse is just wonderf...

So many good things to write about this place---service is EXCELLENT! This is my #1 criteria in choosing a place. Staff were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Great view of Silver Lake, fresh linens daily, they'll even do your dishes for you! I love that they have a nice selection of movies for free--we had to stay in (1) day when it was just pouring all day---still have a nice view, good movie and full kitchen made it a nice day to just cuddle and relax, while seafood steaming in kitchen. The only thing I would probably ask to be improved is the spotty wi-fi in hotel, but if you're out all day it probably doesn't matter. So overall, I will stay here again---worth the $$$$!

Room Tip: 201 is the best!---can listen to music from Jolly Rogers Pub from your balcony (best seat in the hou...

We stayed at Captains Landing this summer (July). We had stayed there a couple of years ago off season and liked it OK., but most of the island was shut down due to it being off season.
We wanted to see what it was like in season so we went for four nights in July.
The hotel is well kept and very clean. We were in room 102. The rooms while not luxurious are spacious and have a full kitchen. It was very comfortable, although the sofa could use freshening and the noise from adjacent rooms was very noticeable. The staff couldn't have been more pleasant and accommodating. There are large patios with a great view of the harbor and sunsets.
If you do stay at Ocracoke, I would suggest you be sure to book a place with a kitchen. The restaurants are all overpriced for mediocre food at best. There are several variety stores where you can purchase grocery's and prepare much better meals than you would get at any of the restaurants there. Another plus for a Captains Landing room with a kitchen.
There is plenty to do on the island if you are not looking for night life. You can fish, kayak, para-sail or do countless other activities. The beaches are beautiful and if you have four wheel drive you can ride along the beaches and find solitude if you desire. They have however, implemented a permit system for driving on the beach. As of this year you need to purchase a weekly permit for 50.00 and attend a short class to be allowed to drive on the beach.
Overall we had a good time and may return eventually.

First - the good: The front desk staff, housekeeping, and the friendly handyman were very helpful. Having a full kitchen was a huge benefit, the views were simply lovely, and the location was excellent. As for the bad - having to make reservations through a rental company rather than the Inn, was a huge pain. All monies have to be paid in advance of your stay. By the time that several contracts were signed, we felt as though we'd gone through a complicated courtcase. We also were not happy that a significant number of people had access to our credit card information. Lastly, I would urge the Inn to put window coverings up rather than just white blinds. The aluminum blinds were broken or bent. While we liked the Inn itself, if fellow travelers are reserving there, take along some large pashimas and a few clothes pins - these will cover at least the bedroom blinds.

Room Tip: Choose the second floor and ask for a quiet room in the middle for the best view. Chose a suite wit...

We wanted to see a more relaxed and 'rustic' side of the Carolinas compared with Charleston or Durham during our trip so headed for the Outer Banks and Ocracoke for 4 nights. Arrived on the ferry and saw Captain's Landing overlooking the harbour. Great location. We were made to feel most welcome by George and Betty, the owners, who live off site.
The accommodation was a very spacious one-bedroom apartment on the first floor with a large balcony - right on the water with a sun deck for all guests on the dock below. Spotless, comfortable and not only a greta view but also right in the middle of Ocracoke (the only habitation on the island). Charming place all round - well worth a return (and the spectacular storm on the last night was a bonus!)

Room Tip: First floor is probably better for the view - or the top floor apartment if you have a large group.

Captain's Landing is a fantastic place to stay in Ocracoke. Most suites have one and one half baths that are very clean. There is a separate kitchen with full size appliances, basic cooking equipment and eating utensils. There is a large outdoor porch that overlooks Silver Lake. The penthouse and cottage have many more amenities. We frequently eat "take out dinner" to the porch and watch activity in the harbor. The furniture and decor is above usual standards. Pictures in the living and bedroom are very limited copies of original signed art from local Ocracoke artists. Captains Landing does not serve food. I think most people prefer not to eat food at a hotel restaurant. There are great restaurants such as Dajio and Jolly Roger less than 100 yards from Captains Landing. Dajio serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Other great restaurants are less than a half mile away. The owners of Captains Landing make themselves available day and night if help is needed. Ocracoke is the last unspoiled area of the Outer Banks that is similar to the Outer Banks forty years ago. The exceptions are the several non chain restaurants available in town. You won't find any Wal-Mart's or McDonald's at Ocracoke. I highly recommend Captains Landing if you plan to visit this lovely Island.

Room Tip: Good hotels provide pictures of their suites and the surround area. While you may not see the shower...

We chose this place largely based on the mostly positive reviews in TripAdvisor; I think this is the first time we were let down. I don't want to mislead, it wasn't bad, but in our view did not deserve the rankings it has recieved.
For starters, whilst they claim to be a "hotel", there is no restaurant, and hence no breakfast.
More importantly, it was quickly rather clear that the owner's here were more interested in maximising their profits rather than maximising their guests' experiences.
I'll start with the good points -- excellent location, and very clean and well maintained. It was convenient, and the terrace right on Silver Lake was nice.
Furnishings were basic and the "decorator" obviously had a limited sense of style or beauty, in fact, they didn't bother spending money on any art at all.
From the start, the owners seemed far more interested in collecting a non-refundable advance payment from us for the entire stay than in ensuring we had a good experience -- I would guess they have had more than one disappointed guest in the past that wanted to move elsewhere but who, like us, was trapped by their advance payment requirement,
The place was OK, but after seeing some of the other options available in Ocracoke, it was clear we made the wrong choice.
