“A wonderful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2007

There are eleven rooms in the main house. Actually, the main house is the ONLY place since the outlying condos and apartments have been spun-off to owners. So, the Castle is now a pure B&B. It is situated right on the harbor with a nice dock on which you can watch the boats coming and going. It is an interesting and pretty house. The rooms are spotless, we have stayed in two of them. The rooms have period furniture and very nice. I suppose it could be noisy, as others have suggested but we haven't been bothered. The breakfast is the best we have had at a B&B.

My gripe, if there is any, is price. With tax our bill was $175. Thats steep for out of season. But we are on an island, where everything is more expensive. Am not sure what other places charge but I would bet the Castle is the most expensive place on the island. Anyway, do go to Ocracoke, it is a unique place and stay at the Castle. But bring money.

Castle has alot of charm and character. Walls, floors and ceilings are all wood, no sheetrock anywhere! Altho I was concerned this would make rooms a bit dark, they were very inviting, nicely decorated. Ours had plenty of room for 3, comfortable beds (even the twin was comfy), refrig in room. But, as noted elsewhere, it was VERY noisy. Since floors and ceiling are wood, the sound of footsteps was amplified and the people upstairs went to bed late and got up early -- we heard every step. Also you could hear some noise from common area, which is right outside the room, and from people using ice machine.
The pool area is very nice, and the pool house has sauna and steam room. Unlike many places, the Castle provides plenty of lounge chairs and clean towels at its pool. It was also convenient to have a full breakfast at the Inn, we enjoyed meeting many of the other guests.
We would not stay on the first floor again. Would consider renting a 2nd floor room, depending on price.
We also stayed next door at the Harbor Inn on this trip, which was much less expensive. Room had less character and not as large, but was clean and comfortable and much more quiet (even tho we were on 1st floor).

  • Liked — Spacious, nicely decorated room with comfortable beds
  • Disliked — 1st floor room very noisy, temperature forA/C could not be controlled in room

Stayed with the family for two days (more about that in a moment) in two adjoining condo units, which converted into "one unit". They were spacious, well appointed, neatly decorated, and very, very comfortable for the 5 of us (the Juniper suites). We would stay here again in a heartbeat (in fact, we plan to next year).

The pool is quite nice, and a great place to cool off after a hot day on the beach and in the ocean. Fun to relax there after return, before heading out to a great dinner on the island. The rest of the amenities were also more than adequate, although the bike selection was a bit weak (we went ahead and rented bikes from an off-property dealer). Peddled to the coffee shop (don't miss it) and elsewhere around the island. Plenty to do and see for a few days, or a week.

Even got one morning of really good waves for surfing, which we haven't seen here before, although we don't normally stay on the island.

About the days - we had booked three days stay, and due to a momentary lapse of sanity, showed up a day late. After a second or two of hesitation, the staff (Jamie) deftly accomodated us, and put us into our originally reserved rooms, although they were about to be rented to others as they thought we weren't coming. Clearly, without a doubt, our mistake, but there was no talk of us paying for the full 3 nights, which surprised me. Southern hospitality? Perhaps, but this attitude endeared this place to us, and guarantees that we'll be back!

Wonderful place, great location, and we will be back. Don't hesitate to visit the Castle!

  • Liked — Location, accomodations, island style
  • Disliked — Bike selection could have been better - not a big deal

This is the second time we've stayed at the Castle, and I'd say this stay bordered on average/to above average This time we stayed on the first floor . The room has a t.v. and small refrigerator, and had plenty of space for just two people. It was also very clean. I thought our bed was comfortable, firm. Be advised that you can hear the neighbors both above and beside you very clearly and should take earplugs to sleep. During the day...well you'll just have to leave the room or deal with it.

The country breakfast is good, but I got tired of having virtually the same thing every day. The food also tends to be a bit heavier (eggs/pancakes/french toast, bacon, sausage, cheese grits, fried potatoes, biscuits) for those who are health concious. The pool is wonderful and despite advertising free bikes for their guests, there was not one to be found during our entire week long stay. I'd recommend bringing one or plan on renting one right across the street from the B&B. In all, the house is beautiful and very comfortable. If your active, you probably wont spend a whole lot of time there. I've been to better B&B's overall , but I think its the best place to stay on the island and would return.

We were told that the Castle has been/or is in process of being sold and the name will change.

  • Liked — Pool
  • Disliked — You can hear everything going on above and next to your room

Every year we make our annual 4th of July trip to Ocracoke. This time was our first stay at the castle, we stayed in one of the condos, it was quite pricey, but comfortable, we had a 1 bedroom, the kids stayed on the sleep sofa which was broken and we had to fight with each night, the location was excellent, my 10 yo played on the dock with all the other kids, and rode her bike around, we brought our own bikes but they have ones to use, but not for the little ones. Its close to everything the icecream shop and there are plenty of restaurants to eat at. The parade is right down the street from the hotel. If you dont have a good time here, nothing will make you happy, the beaches are awsome, you do need a 4x4 to get to em. But tat the nice part about it, you just drive on the beach unload your stuff and you there.

My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights at the Castle in Ocracoke. The Castle is very unique, and has some very nice amenities like a swimming pool, sauna, spa, free use of bikes, etc. It was very clean and the staff very friendly and accomodating. The view of Silver Lake from the Castly is excellent. We had a wonderful time!

After a very disappointing honeymoon to a five-star resort on St. Lucia in May 2005, my husband surprised me with a second honeymoon in July 2005 to Ocracoke Island, one of our favorite places. He made reservations at The Castle Bed & Breakfast. What a wonderful, relaxing place. Our room was perfect with a great view of the harbor. All the restaurants and shops are a short walk (or drive if you prefer)away. Plus, bikes are provided for use by the guests. We took advantage of the observation deck located just across the road to watch the sunset and enjoy the star-studded night sky. The morning breakfast buffet was quite good. We loved the blueberry muffins and the ladies make quite a delicious cup of coffee...a perfect start to any morning. The weather was perfect for the beach and it was refreshing to come off the beach and take a dip in the pool at the Castle. We also fished off the docks located just across from the Castle. We caught pig fish, a flounder, crabs, etc. No trophies, just for fun. We were kept company by a white egret and a family of 5 sea otters. That was more wildlife than we saw during our entire stay on St. Lucia. Ocracoke Island is so laid back and so is the Castle. We will definitely be back again and again. Thank you, Honey, for a wonderful second honeymoon! And, thanks to everyone at The Castle Bed & Breakfast!
