Good tips, good souvenirs, maps, all of that. Nice picnic areas on the side. Ferries schedules, a must have in this island.

“In my travel experience, the Visitor Center is always the first place to go.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2010

Absolutely, start here. Pick up the visitor map of the local attractions, and chat with someone who knows the island. They always have the best advice.

“Ocracoke Island Attractions we seen.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2007

We visited Ocracoke Island and seen several attractions there. You have to take the toll-free ferry to get there which takes about 40 minutes. It's a neat thing to do if you've never rode a ferry. Ocracoke Island is only 14 miles long, so it's pretty crowded when you get in town. The Ocracoke Lighthouse is nice to see but there's only room for about 5 cars (no joke) to park at one time to look at it, so you may have to wait awhile for somebody to pull out so you can park. The lighthouse is the oldest working one in the Southeast. We seen the British Cemetery which was very interesting to read about. The Ocracoke Ponies could be seen from the road, so we had to stop and take pictures. We visited the Ocracoke School which had an enrollment of 72 students from K-12. The kids thought that was something. Of all the places we seen, Teach's Hole is a must see at Ocracoke to learn about Blackbeard the famous pirate. So many gift shops to explore, I loved it!
