Just got back from Ocracoke, our 14th trip, but first time to Portsmouth. You really need to decide what you want from this trip. Portsmouth can be quite buggy with mosquitos and biting flies. Yhe old village is one of the worst areas, especially have rain. The beaches are wide, basically bug free and great for shelling. Now comes the question. At $85. per head, is riding an ATV a short distance, looking for shells then doing it all over again worth the cost? If shelling is your main reason for going, a better suggestion would be to go to the community store and ask for someone to boat you over and return for you at a designated time. Cost, approx. $30. You can take a beach umbrella and set up a spot on the beach and walk for miles if you like. It all depends on want you want for your money.
