“Location, Location, What's that smell”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

I'm not sure if the other reviewers who gave this place an excellent rating have ever stayed in a motel before, but this property is not great. The rooms are painfully outdated and uncomfortable. The carpets are worn and dirty. (yes it's a beach motel but this was more than that) The beds are terribly uncomfortable and the pillows are encased in plastic. I'm not going to go on and on about it, just understand that the accommodations are terrible.

The location is great, and if you have a boat you could book a room here and sleep on the boat. The beach is walkable and is decent, but is very narrow down at this end of the Island. The pool is small but open late. The observation deck on either side of the upper level has some plastic lounges on it and was really the best part of the stay because there was somewhere comfortable to sit and chill at the end of the day that wasn't the room.

Do not stay here. If budget is your reason to consider this hotel, save up more money, have a garage sale, donate plasma, do whatever you have to do to stay anywhere else. This motel was $15 more expensive than the Quality Inn & Suites we stayed at in Gatlinburg on the way down and I will never stay here again.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

We stayed here after reading many favorable reviews. We went in knowing all its faults. The motel is older and definitely needs updating. Our A/C was not working the night we arrived and the management moved us to another room, but back to the same room the next morning and the A/C was working. There are buckets with sand for smokers everywhere and they are well-used.... The beach is beautiful and very close. The pool is small. There is fishing off the pier. The restaurant onsite is really good but gets very crowded on weekends. We wanted to experience Oak Island... we have. If we come back, we'd definitely rent a house -- rentals were everywhere!

Room Tip: Ask for view of the marina, not the parking lot.

...it is a good value. The motel is older, but if you just need a place to sleep while you explore the island, marina, and beaches, it's a good deal. The folks there are friendly, too. The beach is a short walk from your room. The marina, a restaurant, and a pool are on the premisis. In addition, there are benches along the marina side that make for a pleasant place to unwind after a long day.

If you are on a tight budget and have limited time to stay at the beach, This is the place for you. The staff was very friendly and attentive. It is just a short 5 minute walk to the beach and they have a pool. The rooms were clean and the view of the waterway was gorgeous. There is a restaurant/bar on the premises. It was a little pricey but the food was great and plentiful. If you are a guest of the Motel, you can put in your name at the restaurant, go back to your room and they will call you when your table is ready. Or in our case, the phones were out of service so they physically came to our room to let us know our table was ready. There were just a few drawbacks. Like I said, the phones were not working, but if you bring your cell phone, that shouldn't be a problem. The walkway on the upper floors is a bit small so you will have to do some maneuvering with your luggage or coolers. The biggest problem, if you can call it a problem is that the toilets have seats, but no lids. One of our towels fell off the shelf into the toilet. lol All in all it was a great trip and I would recommend it to anyone just as it was recommended to me.

Room Tip: Top floor on the back side has better views

The best part of our stay was being within walking distance to the beach. The hotel is in a good location, and the front desk staff were very nice. The beach on Oak Island is beautiful and the waves were big enough to surf on. The Blue Water Point Motel was fine for a short stay but the rooms were not nice at all compared to other hotels (I travel a lot and stay in upscale hotels like Marriott Marquis etc...). Although the motel was clean and the housekeeping service did a good job stocking our room with towels and making the beds, the air conditioner was quite loud running all night and smelled moldy/musty. Our room had a nice view of the intercoastal waterway but it was hard to sleep as the curtains did not keep out the morning light and the mattresses were very old. The pillows were covered in plastic allergen covers but the mattresses were not. The area is quiet but the room itself was loud with people passing by in the outdoor corridor and walking in the next room over. It would be better to stay in a nice beach house on Oak Island as our room was around $100/night and this seemed overpriced for the quality. There are very few restaurants on the island and the ones we visited were poor, serving frozen onion rings and on plastic dinnerware for example. If you are used to staying in nicer hotels, you would prefer renting a beach house on Oak Island. We were only there for a few nights and this was our best option for its location, but we will likely never come back to Oak Island as there is not much to do other than go to the beach-we were there for a wedding and we found the island location to be quite remote and lacking dining options. There are fishing excursions and the beach is beautiful but the overall impression of the island itself was average.

Room Tip: If you choose this hotel, stay in an room on the second level to avoid noise from above.

MOTEL: We have came yearly for the last 4 years, and it is the ONLY place we like to stay. The motel is what you would expect from a older "beach motel". Aged, and a little worn. BUT it is clean, and the location is just PERFECT! My husband loves that he can fish just mere steps from the room, also, the beach is a pleasant very short walk which is great for me and my 2 year old son (and asll of his stuff). The staff are super friendly, and we always feel like we are coming home when we visit. If you have not stayed at BWP, you really should. You won't regret it.

FISH HOUSE: The restaurant is delish too, but I did not like all of the guys outside "flirting"... Won't go near it without my husband and you probably shouldn't either :)

My sister and I hit the road on a spur of the moment trip. We wanted to stick our toes in the ocean. Well, I found Blue Water Point Motel on tripadvisor. I read the reviews, it sounded good. Well, it was better than good !!! Sid really took care of us and soon as we walked into the marina ship store. A room was made ready, it was clean and comfortable. Only 300 steps to the beach. Oak Island, NC is small, quite, peaceful, and perfect for de-stressing. I know we will return soon.

Room Tip: No bad views.
