“Declining rapidly”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

We have been going to his establishment for nearly 30 years under various names and for the past 4 it has been declining rapidly. Admittedly, the restaurant has undergone numerous owners over the decades but the current management has neglected the quality of the food, service and cleanliness. The senior menu is generous and would be a value if the food was worth the wait - it is not. Sadly, until another change in ownership, we will end our 30+ years of patronage with our final disappointing visit this years.

“Excellent seafood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

We eat here every year and love it. The grilled red snapper and mahi mahi are the best. The side dishes are not that great, but the fish more than makes up for that. The service is good as well. It gets crowded pretty quickly so try and beat the dinner crowd. They only serve breakfast and dinner, which is a shame because we wanted to come back for lunch.

“Food ok but extremely slow service.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

Looking for a place to get a late breakfast, we saw that Jolly Rogers was still serving it after 10:30 and decided to try them. The first sign that we should have went somewhere else was the handwritten sign on the door saying that good food takes time to prepare, so please be patient. The next sign that we may have made a mistake was that during the 15 minutes we were waiting for someone to take our order, we noticed that most of the people in the restaurant did not have any food yet. The next sign was that as we waited over 45 minutes our food, it took over 15 minutes for anybody to notice that our drinks had run dry and offer us refills. We were wondering how much longer we should wait before just paying for our drinks and leaving when a waitress came over and asked us what we ordered and who had taken our order. She went back to check and told us it was almost ready to come out, which it did several minutes later. While we were waiting we saw a table of 6 leave as their food arrived and at least one other table of 4 left after they had ordered due to the extremely long wait.

The food was ok. Not bad, but nothing special. There was no reason it took so long to get scrambled eggs, pancakes, and a biscuit & gravy. They weren't extremely busy. Everyone got seated as they came in and there were still several empty tables the whole time we were there. At some point I started to feel bad for the waitresses, as they were constantly apologizing to the customers, and I got a sense that the problems were in the kitchen. But the waitresses also seemed pretty "territorial" and unwilling to help each other. Several times another waitress walked by our table with a tea pitcher and ignored our empty glasses.

There are just too many other dining options on Oak Island for me to return to Jolly Rogers or to recommend it to others.

“Great breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

The staff was great just like the meal. Everyone was nice and the coffee was there when my cup was near empty. I like to try their lunch and dinner the next trip. Their pancakes, sunnyside eggs and bacon was great. The price was good also.

“Best American Seafood for Value on Oak Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

I am a native of Oak Island and Jolly Roger is my and my boyfriends' choice for American style seafood. You won't beat this seafood for the value. The choice for locals when it comes to southern fried seafood without the tourist atmosphere. When my friends and family come to visit I take them to Jolly Roger. The prices are reasonable and it has a good family atmosphere and good kids meals and regular country sides like collards and fried okra and mac-n-cheese. Good stuff!
