“Great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2009

I am sorry to see these negative reviews below, we had such a great experience! First Colony Inn is larger than your average b&b so there are some small differences you notice such as the lack of an "innkeeper presence" and the breakfast is buffet style but it was just as nice as a small, quaint b&b (and we have stayed in many!).

When we checked into our room (#22) I was a little nervous about the size based on the website photo but it was actually quiet decent in size...although I will warn you the shower is teeny tiny. Our room had all the normal amenities but also had a TV, mini fridge, wet bar, and microwave...I thought these were all nice extras. It was very quiet on the third floor, we really never heard any of the other guests while we were in our room.

The Inn itself is a little dated, it could use some structural work but it is still very nicely appointed. There are several decks with chairs for everyone to use and had plenty of parking. The beach is directly across the street and had a crosswalk so getting over to the other side was never a problem. There was a nice sized pool but it was being worked on this weekend so we did not get to use it...but the beach is so close we did not feel like we missed out.

Each day they had a wine and cheese reception from 3 to 5pm which was very nice and the breakfast buffet had both hot and cold items, lots to choose from. The staff were very friendly, there when you needed them but not intrusive.

I plan conferences and conventions for a living and am used to staying in luxury properties frequently…this is not exactly what I would call luxury but I am a hotel snob and do not give out good feedback unless I honestly believe it. First Colony Inn is a cozy place, good for families or couples and was a great deal for the price. We definitely plan to return next time we are visiting OBX.

We were expecting a nice, historic facility near the beach, but we got something quite different. It reminded my of the wilderness camp I went to when I was young.
You get into your room via a rusty, creaking storm door, and the inside was gross. It was musty, there were stains all over the carpet, and there was sand all over the dresser. The room did not feel like it had been truly cleaned. Furthermore, there were bags of garbage and dirty clothes throughout the halls.

The pool is nothing like the photo. It is a small rectangle surrounded by a fence, and it is in bad need of resurfacing. You can only reach the beach by crossing a tattered yard and a major road (no, my room was not "oceanside" as the website claimed). The one positive event of the two hours we spent at the Inn is the woman at the front desk let us leave without charging us for the night.

Overall, the place is run down and a bit dreary. If you are looking for a nice bed and breakfast stay, this is not it.

I was so excited to stay at this Inn! It was very nice. Great sized rooms, wonderful yard to play in, great wrap-around deck with rocking chairs to sit and relax on... Only drawback, and this is minor, is that it is not oceanfront. It is across the street and down a little boardwalk. Every one here was really nice and helpful. We brought our 15 month old son and they were so nice to all of us. (You never know how someone will treat you when you show up with a kid!!) Such a great value and so many nice touches. The breakfast every am was good and the wine and cheese in the afternoon was great, too. I would definitely stay here again! Free wi-fi, too.

All considered, we liked First Colony Inn. Nicely appointed, spacious, well maintained rooms, comfortable beds. Breakfast not spectacular but good. Friendly, helpful staff, but don't expect help lugging baggage upstairs. Would, however, agree with previous reviewers who write about the proximity to ocean and views: there really aren't any. We were on the third floor; the guy who booked us promised a "harbor view and limited ocean view;" I would disagree on both counts. That said, if beachfront location and ocean views are not important to you, I would recommend the FCI without hesitation.

Although the First Colony Inn is not on the ocean, it is only a short walk across the street to a lovely, quiet and very clean beach. The Inn itself is architechturally interesting, with a sprawling porch and rocking chairs, a nice lawn, and an outdoor swimming pool (which would be nice in the summer).. The room was large, comfortable and very quiet, except for the sounds of the birds. We thought it was charming, and would certainly stay there again if we pass through Nags Head.

I booked an "oceanview" room, only to find out that the hotel is between a highway and a major road. Oceanview is like saying the room faces Europe -- it is out there somewhere. I had expected ocean breezes going through my room. But the hotel is -- according to the front desk clerk -- "set back 500 feet" from the ocean. This means behind another hotel & across several streets. The clerk was really quite rude about it. The address is incorrect, in terms of accessing it. You enter the hotel from the main highway on the island.
The bath/furnishings are not top quality, but they try to make up for that with top notch toiletries. The breakfast is nothing special.
Overall, I went away feeling that this place was not worth the expense.

Took my sister for a "big" birthday trip. Staff pleasant yet very low key (excellent!). Very comfortable and welcoming inn. Great room (#15). Wonderful amenities. Nice bathroom products, fridge, micro, minibar. Lovely breakfast. Afternoon wine & cheese; great out in the sun on the lovely back deck. Free beach towels and beach chairs.

Really, all the modern conveniences we like, while maintaining the historic charm we love.
